Alaska Experiment . What would you take for...

Let us engage in a mental exercise. It is rainy and not much is going on for today. Sooo. Imagine if you have been selected to go on this three month excursion and by sheer chance the producers have allowed you to take four firearms. What would they be? I should say, if any of them are rifles they have to be a lever action.

For me I would take the following.

1. A Marlin 45-70 with removable scope mounts. That would be the main meat gathering/bear protection firearm. I'd like to have an Ashley Ghost ring sight mounted and a weaver type rail for a detachable 4x scope.

2. A Marlin M39 .22 lr. This would be the small game gun. Plenty of chances to take ptarmigan and snowshoe hare when needed. In addition it can be used for pesky red squirrels or other vermin that can sucumb to the 22 lr.

3. A Remington M870- pump action 12 guage in 3" magnum. This would be the waterfowl gun .

4. Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull , 7 1/2 barrel. This would be on my hip at all times with Buffalo Bore loads for that added sense of peace of mind. I would also have a 2x scope for the rings for some hunting opportunities if they arise.

Ok. So what would be your choices?

Mine wouldn't be much different....

1. Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 with an xs sight rail system that has the peep sight, and a detachable 2 1/2 x Leupold Scout scope. My own Hand loads would go with.

2. A Ruger Alaskan Revolver in 454/45 colt, 2 1/2" barrel that will be stuffed with 454 only also on my hip.

3. My Benelli Super 90 12 Gauge for Birds, and a few slugs for back up to my rifle.

4. Puma 92 in .45 Colt to have for any occasion. Will keep it nearby at all times. I could get by with the 1st 3, but you did allow 4 to go so I added this one.

I'll assume by your choices "no" that you'll have a cabin or some such to keep these.

1) Marlin 1895 45-70 standard model with black chrome treatment to all of the metal and with black poly furniture with past pad installed - simple nylon sling installed.
2) 4 3/4" Ruger Blackhawk Stainless in 45 Colt - with flap holster and belt with cartridge box.
3) 6" Ruger Mk II Stainless in .22LR with target sights - flap holster and belt with cartridge box.
4) 12 Guage Rem 870 Wingmaster with synthetic furniture and black chrome treament to all metal.

This would be easy choices for me:

1. Wild West Guns - Co-Pilot conversion of Marlin 1895. Its a take down, carries a scout mounted low variable leopold scope. in 45-70/.457 magnum calibers. kevlar stocks, action job, 3/4 loop, high vis sighrts, ghost ring rear.

2. on my hip would be my Freedom Arms, 5 1/2", octagon barreled .45lc stoked with some hot keith style heavy bullets.

3. my shotgun would a 12 gauge British made Midland hammer shotgun that 86er rebuilt and sold to me.

4. choice of either my Freedom Arms .22lr/.22mag in 4 1/4 heavy barrel (adjustable sights) or my marlin 39 TDS (16 inch barrel takedown)


How much ammo would I take? do we take hand loader? or enough ammo to last the length of time? Depending on the time of year, I would definately take fishing tackle and one or two travel rods. (I have those chosen too. )


this question is pretty much along the lines of what I am trying to get down too. I have several others I have to deal with like 1. my custom muzzleloader 2. my SW 3" model 60 pro in .357 3. my bond .45/.410 derringer and 4. my NKJ .357 model 92.

A Remington 870 in 12 gauge. The smoothbore slug barrel with sights would be my choice.

1) A winchester/browning 1886 in 45-70 with some heavy loads for the big guys and some reg 405's for deer and such. while were dreaming can It have a quick detach scout scope so I can use leverevolution for the long range shots

2)Remington 870 for birds and a slug barrel as an extra big game getter

3)A ruger srh in .454 cut and ported to 4 inches

4) a remington 34 .22 boltgun, one of my all time favorite game guns

My back up would be my 7 1/2" .45colt Vaquero

The .22 will keep me in rabbits and other game even deer with good shots and it is easy to carry large amounts of ammo.
The .45 would be kept for bears that get to interested for my own good.

My Stainless Guide Gun in .45-70 with cartridges from Grizzly
A Ruger 10/22 for small game with lots of ammo
A Remington 870 in 12 gauge with 2 3/4 inch shells from Federal in 6 and 7½ shot sizes
My Ruger Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger on my hip with handloads of 425 grain LFN Cast Performance bullets over 20.5 grains of IMR 4227. With this pistol/bullet combo I would feel confident of surviving an encounter with a bear if I can get the pistol into use.

Well I didn't go to Alaska but right beside it in Northern BC I just got back Friday night was only a 3 week trip though...

The guns I took were...

26" Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM with 300gr loads @ 2750fps.

18.5" Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 with 525gr WLNGC loads @ 1650fps.

20" Puma M92 in 454 Casull with 360gr WLNGC' loads @ 1850fps.

4.25" modified Ruger SRH in 454 Casull with the same loads above as well as 405gr WLNGC's @ 1330fps.

Four; that is quite a choice:

Like everyone else: a 45-70 with heavy loads, sticking with what I own: an 1895 with Ghost Ring Sights.

My Remington 870 12 GA 28" Barrel for fowl of any kind. I would purchase a 18" Cyl barrel for backup when not hunting.

My Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Mag

My Daughter's M94-22, (in all fairness, I did give it to her at Christmas).

Colt SAA 4-¾" in .45 Colt with Winchester 225 gr. Silvertips, just to make a dying statement to Mr. Bear!

A Savage 24 .30-30 /20 ga. with a receiver sight and a front sight I can see. My only M/24's are rimfire but I'd buy one for these and might just get one anyway

If I ever got lucky enough to go to Alaska I would only carry one gun, as from experience, if I have a choice of firearms "I" would always have the wrong one at the wrong time.

Don't fancy takin' on a Grizzly with a .22 or a pistol and boy would a .45/70 make a mess of Squirrels.

I think a 12GA Remington 870 with a good choice of ammo would cover most things and I'd never let it be out of reach.

I doubt if many Caucasian men have repeated his lifetime experiences. Since modern .308 is nearly identical to the older 30-06 ammo, I'll take my Savage and be well prepared.

South Dakota is plenty c-c-cold during the long winter months. I don't much care for the giant utility bills and treacherous roads that go along with Winter. I'll pass on moving to Alaska because 9.5 months of winter doesn't match my concept of the good life. I picture myself retiring to New Mexico in 12 years.

Wow, going of the guns i have I would take:

1. FN-FAL .308 w/extra mags
2. Rossi 92 in .357 mag
3. S&W 686 357 mag
4. Ruger 10-22

I know the FN is against the post likings but it is a tried and proven foul weather design. Plus it packs a wallup with the current .308 ammo. The two .357s compliment each other on the ammo type side. Both small rifles can be strapped to a pack and carried short distances without too much problem. The pistol is a smaller caliber but with a heavy bullet would at least allow me to shoot my self before the bear ate me.

Just figured the weight of the ammo with just the bullets and it weighs 155lbs. Might wanna loose some .22lr and 12ga.

2. My 10/22 with 30 and 50rnd. mags and lots to feed it.
3. My 870 with Extra-full, modified, and rifled choke tubes. #6, No.4 Buck, 00Buck, and Foster style slugs
4. My SRH 454 with 300gr. Partitions

My 8wt fly rod, and plenty of bugs. A spinning outfit with 8-30lb Spiderwire and plenty of plugs in particular Rapala's.
A good Case fillet knife, my Green River Skinner, my Buck Mini Night Hawk, and this Western skinner that I have.
A decent whetrock and a good sharpening steel.

For my wife a Dutch Oven, a 12" frying pan, a 10" frying pan, and a 12" pot.

Marlin 1894C 357/38 carbine & companion taurus .357 revolver.

(i'd take my ruger p9 mm carbine and ruger p95dc 9mm if given a choice, too)

all with open 'factory' sights (possibly red dot/holo sighting devices on the carbines, too)...not that i like them all that much but optics can be a set back in the field if dropped, fall into water, etc...i find i can get open sights into play much faster than optical sights, too...not to mention the additional weight.

small? yes...however...one can carry a LOT of 357/38 or 9mm ammo, too...

both carbines have adequate 'knock down' and accuracy to dispatch game to survive on and to defend ones self against all but the most voracious and largest of predators and are light enough to be able to carry and handle quite easily. i also have a 39A, but for "survival" on a three month basis, i personally, would not choose a rimfire.

this is a very good thread...it keeps one in thought as to "what to do" when and if the need arises.

If I get to go back to Alaska to hunt something besides people, I would agree on the Wild West Co-Pilot, Rem 870 w/two barrels, Ruger 10-22 w/supressor, and 5 shot ruger .45 LC/454. and as much ammo as I could carry. Sorry about the can but I like quiet when I am only getting dinner.
