Marlin Spikehorn

Post by Dave »

I have always liked short, light rifles. My main gun is a Marlin 336 with an 18.5" barrel that's scouted and my other is a pre64 Winchester 94 carbine with peeps. At a gun store I frequent they had one last Spikehorn still new for sale. Every time I went I saw it, wanted it, and didn't buy it. The other day I went to the store and it was gone. I wasn't surprised. I couldn't believe it stayed as long as it did. I checked GunBroker for kicks and there were zero for sale.
Yesterday I went to the same store to get some Breakfree and lo and behold the Spikehorn was back! They had just moved it from the spot it was usually in. I said "That's it!" It is laying on the bed now. I'm glad I can finally quit thinking about that gun!
I guess I will just slide it into the safe for now. I don't really need it and am not sure why I wanted it so badly especially since I paid retail for it. Just had to scratch the levergun itch I guess.
I'm glad I got it though.

I had always hoped to see a Spikehorn in 38-55.....I suppose that was pretty optimistic.

Mr Miller:

Image

16" Marlin 336Y Spikehorn shown with 20" 336T for comparison. Receivers are aligned to show difference in LOP for the youth-dimensioned buttstock.

My Spikehorn is a comparatively heavy little bugger due to lumber attached to it. Really dense walnut.

Noah,

Thanks for the pics. That little Spikehorn is neat. My wife is sitting here and she said that would fit just fine. Meaning it would fit her. I agreed.

Joe:

It's perfect for a petite woman. A couple friends' wives have fired it and pronounced if fit for service.

Not a lot of felt recoil due to the weight of the gun and the effect of the factory rubber recoil pad. Believe it or not, on my old Fairbanks counter scale, the Spikehorn is 6 lb, 10 oz. The twenty-inch 336T is only 3 oz heavier than the 16" Spikehorn at 6 lb, 13 oz.

Balance point on the Spikehorn is about where the lever pivot screw is, unloaded. Butt-heavy for sure, but not a lot of junk in the trunk.

Noah,

The Spikehorn kinda looks likes Marlins version of the Trapper, but for a shorter person.
I think I'll keep my eyes open for one. Wifie needs a new lever gun ...

I bought mine back in Oct. 2004 at the Bass Pro in Ft. Lauderdale. I drove up from South Miami to buy a Winchester 94 they had on sale for $300. When I got there, and it was the first morning of the sale flyer, they were out of the Winchesters.
I raised a stink, and they let me pick a Marlin 336Y for the same price. I had never heard of a Spikehorn, but it looked good, and the price was right. When I got it home, I realized that the LOP on the stock was way too short. I made a spacer from a piece of Walnut, and have been happy ever since.
The rifle will turn on 5 shot groups of an inch or less at 100 yards, using my handloads. The scope is an older Denver Redfield 1X4 variable 20mm.
No deer yet, but this carbine is a hog killing machine. :P
