Here is mine:

10. Barrett M107
9. Mauser 98
8. Mauser 96 in 6.5x55
7. SMLE Jungle Carbine
6. Colt SAA in 45 Colt
5. M1 Garand and it's varients
4. AR's and varients
3. Winchester 94
2. Remington 700
1. The new Ruger M77 Hawkeyes Why? They have alot going for them. Alot of the Pre-64 features are in the action and alot of the Mauser 98 is in the action too. It's about the only one that I'm aware of that is chambering the .358 Winchester.

This is not my top picks, but the ones I consider as innovative, and have truely left behind a legacy, and shown what is possible.

Military arms that made the transition to sporting.... Rifles and pistols ( including, but not limited to: 45-70, .45acp, 30-40, '06, 308, 223, etc)

Smith and Wesson

Ruger

All Levers (and a bunch of them went to modern war, too....Russia, England, etc)

Dangit, 10 is just plain mean :!:

This is simply my opinion so here goes.

1. Earlier Ruger 77(most calibers)
2. GI M1 Garand
3. Winchester 94(pre 64)
4. Winchester 86 or its relatives
5. Mauser 98 (preferably German or former)
6. Winchester 92 of any caliber
7. Remington 12
8. Marlin 336 in 35(never had one but always wanted)
9. 1903 Springfield and variants
10. Early AR-15(preferably Colt or Armalite)

I am surprised that no one added even an honorable mention for the Savage 110 and it's many variants.

It's on the low end but is a truly fine (meaning robust, not the snobby kinda fine) rifle.

I have often wondered why the Winchester Model 70 would be listed as #1. If this gun is "the Rifleman's Rifle" how come are there multiple times the amount of Remingtons out there? Seems to me if it were that good, everyone would have one or two, they would have never been discontinued or the original configuration changed. While I have owned several Model 70s, they were fine specimens but I find the Model 700 to the be better gun.

Otherwise,

Winchester 94
Remington 700
Marlin 39
Marlin 93/36/336
Remington 600/660
Remington 788
Winchester pumps 22s (1890/62)
03A3
Garands
ARs

Well here are mine.... in no particular order:

Winchester Model '94
Winchester Model '86
Winchester Model '92
Winchester Model '73
Winchester Model '85
Winchester Model '88
Winchester Model '95
Marlin Model 1895
Mauser 98 (from which all the other controlled feed, multiple locking bolts were born; Win 70, Rem 700, Ruger 77, Kimbers, Springfield '03, etc , etc...)
M-1 Carbine and as a alternative:
M-1 Garand

Should be adding the 1841 Springfield Rifle (not musket) and it's antecedents the 1861/63 Springfields, and then what was born from them....the Trapdoors. Honorable mention to the Lee (bolts...Enfield, Krag, etc.) actions and the Sharps.

I'm going to come up with my answer in terms of top 10 rifles of all time. Also, I don't understand putting the Winchester 70 and Remington 700 as separate items on the list. For most intents and purposes they are identical so they should be lumped together. Likewise the Winchester 94/Marlin 336.

1. Winchester 70/Remington 700
2. Winchester 92 & 94/Marlin 336 & 94
3. M1 Garand/M14
4. Sharps
5. Ruger 10/22
6. Armalite AR15
7. Hawken percussion rifle
8. Kentucky flintlock
9. pump action .22 riflesj (sorry but I'm historically deficient on makes/models)

I inhereted a Mod 70 Target in 30-06 but wish it was a Featherweight in 308 Win. I've said it before and I will say it again, it was (is?) the most elegant production bolt rifle ever offered. I held one in 30-06 many years ago and I wish I had bought one ever since. I don't know if Browning will bring them back but if they do I should correct my misjudgement when funds allow for it. That is #1 on my "don't need but just want" list.

Life don't get no better!!!! It's pretty much all downhill from there on out.........
I can't take any list that doesn't include the Mod. 94 Win. seriously. It's another lame attempt at marketing guns and writing a "newsworthy" story at the same time(note, I'm not taking personal aim at the NRA of which organization I am a part of).

Some that I like:

Win. 94
Win. 1886
Marlin 336
Ruger 10/22
M-1 Garand(Carbine and Ruger Mini/Ranch should be included too )
Ar-15/M-16 Variants
Sharps 1874 (one of the top three "greats")
Martini Cadet (like the 94 Win, perfection in the hand)
1894 Swedish Mauser Carbine with turned down bolt.
Spencer Rifle and Carbine

I'm getting my new 30-30 Mossberg 464 lever rifle (Winchester 94 clone) tomorrow to keep my Buffalo Bill Commemorative Winchester 94 30-30 company.

Rimfire..your list is a lot closer to mine than the NRA version.

I'd have to put a 1994 Winchester in there instead of a 336 but thats just my preference.

Lot of good rifles there. How about:

Daniel Boone's flintlock
Davy Crockett's caplock
Browning's 1885 Winchester (make mine a .30-40)
John Wayne's 1892 Winchester
Savage 99
Marlin 39
Mannlicher-Schoenauer full stock carbine in 6.5x55
Remington pump in .35 Remington (the old one with the spiral mag tube)
Jack O'Conner's Model 70, .270

And my favorite:
Grandpa's Savage 19 NRA match rifle, .22 LR (Mine too, now)
OK, OK, I made the jump.

Thanks, I remember that 71 very well. It was way too pretty!I couldn't shoot it, don't even think I could leave it in my safe, it would have to be in my sight/possesion 24/7.Did I say it is so dang beautiful ,it troubled me...tempted to send off my beat up 71 for such fine treatment, but then I couldn't shoot it and, so forth....and love that nickname.
