The 30-30 does it again
Smacked this 216lb 8 pointer this morning. Shot it with my old Trapper Marlin. Last deer I shot with it was in 1994. I did mount a 2.5x Leupold on it a couple years ago. Helps with "old eye syndrome".

"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Re: The 30-30 does it again
Thanks guys!
I don't know why I grabbed the old Marlin this morning. I usually prefer Winchesters.
This particular Marlin is a first year 336. I cut it to 16" and installed a Winchester 94 saddle ring many years ago. Built one for my dad from 1950 at the same time. They've been good shooters.

When you get older and your eyes are not as sharp as they used to be, a scope is nothing to be ashamed of. Nice deer.

Nice piece of meat you got there, congratulations.
I'd never sell the .30-30 short. Not long ago I watched a video done by Richard Mann. He was telling of his respect for te reduced power loads for the .308 Win. He feels like you can take anything in North America with it. To me a reduced .308 and a standard .30-30 are pretty much 2 peas from the same pod.

Re: The 30-30 does it again
Thanks again everyone.
Hadn't shot a deer in the morning since 1995. I've missed it. I hate dealing with getting them out in the dark. My stand is way in one corner of out lot. Wouldn't have been fun.
Out here with my dad this morning. It's a balmy 12 degrees.
I switched up stand by 30-30 load a couple years ago. Always used IMR3031. Now I use 34gr of W748 and a CCILR behind a Hornady 170gr FP.

I have never shot a deer in my life with a factory loaded round. I'm strangely proud of that.

That really is a fine buck. I am the same way -- never harvested anything with factory loads.
Killed my first buck with a 336 that Dad ordered for me through the mail from Herter's. Handload was 3031 under a Sierra 150 -- when Sierra was still in California.

Jay....congratulations! Good good ole 30-30 will keep you eating good this winter.
Got an idea before you dispose of the hide.....make yourself a "deer coat" for summer use when it's hot and your looking for small pocket Colts. It'll help save wear on the pockets of the buffalo coat for when your down this way.---6

Re: The 30-30 does it again
Thanks Stretch and GK.
The old 30-30 is one of the most balanced rifle cartridges ever devised IMO.
He was quartering towards me about 30 degrees to his right. I was in a stand about 20ft up. I put the slug a little high and tight behind the left shoulder. It definitely pushed him back and right but didn't knock him down. He stumbled off about 60yds and went down. Not one drop of blood either. Never got this result with a 30-30.
All my others have been a solid DRT, but most old timers I talk to up here have most stumble about 50 yards or so.
I'm always fascinated by a deer's reaction to a hard hit.

Re: The 30-30 does it again
I'm always amazed at how an animal can take a hit. I've seen deer hit by cars that hit the ground running, sadly they die most of the time, others that take a hunk of lead and go go go. I remember shooting a buck many years ago , 12 ga slug broadside through the lungs and that deer went more than 200 yards! Others hit close with buckshot drop DRT. That's why if given the chance I take the head shot!

Wait... wait... WAIT A SECOND here folks. Don't the rest of you see something wrong with this picture?

What the heck does a guy with a Jeep need with a 4-wheeler? I've been told for years that a Jeep can go anywhere, except where a fellar can only walk...
Anyway, congrats on the fine buck... whatever mode of transportation you used!!

Re: The 30-30 does it again
Well Griff it's like this- ya take the jeep until ya cant go anymore THEN ya take the wheeler until ya cant go anymore THEN ya walk into your tree stand and shoot a big buck!
BROWN LABS MATTER !!
Re: The 30-30 does it again
Yup. I thrashed the wheeler pretty good getting in as far as I could so I didn't have to drag any more than necessary. I keep an axe on the wheeler and had to cut a little.
The Jeep will go more places than the Wheeler as long as it will fit. It weren't fitting where that buck was.

Re: The 30-30 does it again
Luckily, this one wasn't crazy bad. I got the wheeler hung up once on a stump coming out, but got it freed up after a minute or so.

Re: The 30-30 does it again
Yep, when I was a newbie at huntin', and old feller told me that the successful hunter went further than any of the other hunters. As in, if they'd walk 500 yards from the road, and you were a mile from the road, they'd simply chase deer TO you!

That's one of our biggest challenges. We are the ONLY ones here. There are no others to push the deer around.

It is. However, a few individuals walking around that aren't in the same party, are not "driving". It does keep deer moving though.

I've heard they are good. Also the 125gr Hornady SST and the Speer 125gr TNT.
I have 18.3gr of H110 behind the TNT doing over 2300 and putting 5 in .75" at 100yds.
