Advice needed - Firearms laws in Canada ....................

Post by Harrington-Cook »

Hi Guys

Can anyone on this board advise what the laws relating to Firearms ownership & shooting are in Canada please.

I live in the UK and shoot leverguns / clays / black powder pistol & rifle & centrefire target rifle (223, 308 & 6.5mm swede)

It looks like we are going to relocate to Calgary ( for 2 to 3 years) in the not too distant future & I need to make some decisions as to what happens to the guns - what can I take with me - what is it worth taking with me etc.

Any help / advice / tips would be greatly appreciated !!!

Regards

Your best bet is to contact the Canadian Firearms Center (cfc.gc.ca I think). You'll need to take the Canadian Firearm Safety Course and, if you want to take your pistols, the Canadian Restricted Firearm Safety Course. Very basic courses - I'm an instructor, and I've had people as young as 12 go through without any problems (can't get their license until 18 though). By the sound of what you have gun wise, sounds like they should be allowed in the country. If you tell me their makes/models I should be able to tell you for sure.

Hi
Thanks for the reply

I have :
Marlin 1894s in both 357 & 44 cal
a 1917 Swedish Mauser Rifle in 6.5 x 55 cal
a BRNO 308 target rifle
a modern (Pietta) black powder pistol (cap & ball) in 44 cal
a modern (Parker Hale) 1858 Enfield 3 band black powder rifle in 577 cal
plus several shotguns - side-side, under-over & semi auto (magazine restricted to only hold 2)
Ruger 10/22 semi-auto 22 LR (10 shot/25shot & 50 shot mags)

Must have missed something in there - but that will do !!

Thanks

Sounds like you're good to go (as long as the semi shotgun won't hold more than 5 without the plug). The Pietta would require a restricted license, but all the rest would be covered by a non-restricted license.
You should check out CanadianGunNutz.com too. Should be able to answer any and all questions you have, and where to shoot in Calgary.

Hi;

I recommend that you live in South West Calgary or a little south and west of Calgary if possible. Easier access to mountain areas and a good Shot Gun club at De Winton which are SW.

Hi Killer Kanuk & B-Lever

Many thanks for the replies !!

B-Lever - you can see where my prioities lie - I'm asking about guns & I never even considered the best place to live !!

My wife will be based in "Sunpark Plaza Calgary, AB T2X 3R4" which looks pretty South to me on Google Earth - so apart from best access to the mountains & shooting - where should we be looking for a house - which districts or areas ? - we have a 3 year old daughter about to get ready for some schooling to consider too !! ?

Should we look to buy or rent ?

Your replies - as always are much appreciated !

Regards

Roy
