OT Winchester 52D question

Post by DavidS »

I need to know what height scope blocks go on a Winchester model 52D with the standard barrel. I know the front block should be higher than the back block for Lyman/Unertl target scopes, but how much?

Get a hold of these folks and they can fix you up, or get you pointed in the right direction.

I have a pretty big book about the W-52 (cant recall the title, at work)

Looked through it last night RE" your question.

I found some pictures that show how the bases could not be the same height.... plus all kinds of drawings explaining the mechanics and changes to the 52 over the years...

Alas... not one table or drawing that detailed scope bases
Sorry.

52 D Bases

Post by kendog »

I believe the 52 C&D is much like the Anschutz 1913 and H&R M12, and other (?) smallbore guns in that the barrel has a slight taper. The scope blocks must be made to the taper of the barrel to get a level plane for standard scope mounting. This was essential for internal adjusting scopes like the Redfield 3200. External adjusting scopes have far more latitude. Each manufacturer had a different taper and bases were made in sets for the individual guns. These rifles are still used quite a bit for NRA smallbore competition and accessories are readily available. I would look at the suppliers to competitive shooters for these mounts. Google Champions Choice, Champions Shooters Supply, Neil Johnson Gunsmithing, or Master Class Shooters Supply, and these guys can get you set up in a hurry.
One advantage to external adjusting scopes is that the mounts can be different heights and there is a lot of adjustment to still enable you to zero for close ranges, and a lower front base can get you on at 200 yards for the mini long range matches. You would need to shim the mounts for an internal scope. With internal adjusting scopes, very few have the range of adjustment to work at standard smallbore distances and 200 yards. Hope this helps.
Good luck

Thanks Kendog and Hillbilly,
I will check out your sources for the bases. I have 1/4" bases on the 52D right now and I lose too much of my elevation adjustment on my Lyman Super Target Spot scope when bore sighting it. I know a taller front block will help, but I may need to buy a couple sizes to see how much it will help.
