76 Chaparal came in, pic

Post by Chuck 100 yd »

The 76 in .50-95 came Wed. but my dealer didn`t pick it up from the post office until Friday. It is HUGE!! Very nice metal work, the stock needs more finish just like my Navy Arms 92 did. That will come when I have more time.

That may take a while with ammo going for $85 US for a box of 20.
I may never fire a factory load. Looking for and have found some of the components to load my own.

The actions really bulk up the gun, don't they?

You should do a log of your .50-95 experiences... People will find it useful.

Hobie, The log is already started. I am surprised to find there is much info out there on the .50-95. I have already purchased a bullet mold from a forum member. Dies are available as is loaded ammo,Brass is advertised by a couple suppliers and I have lots of BP on hand.
Just takes time, AND MONEY!!!

Gorgeous rifle!!!

I'm awaiting a range report too. You gonna load it with black powder or that new fangled smokeless stuff?

Joe, I think I will start with BP. Shaparal lists two smokeless loads on their web site but one of the powders I have never heard of. Must be from Europe??

I know of guys who won't fire corrosive ammo though a semi-auto due to the clean up (vs a bolt action).

I have no issue with corrosive in a semi-auto but doesn't a lever have more nooks and crannies for the BP to accumulate? :?

I'd like to try it in my 1895CB but I'm not crazy about the thought of the extra cleaning.

awp101 They were origionally loaded with black. There still are origional rifles in fine shape.
Cleaning up after using black is not as bad as most people think. Just need to cake a little more care in gettin her clean and lubed .

Chuck,
All three loads in both sites you linked to are black powder. The first one as you saw was FF grade.
The second site showed Goex FF and Cartridge. Cartridge is one of Goex's grades of black powder. I've never used it, but I've read about it.

I think that for as few, compared to say my 30-30, rounds as I'd fire from that rifle, I'd just load it with black powder. Simple and straight forward.

Sharp!

That thing's so big it's pushing the tree over :D

I was with Mike/rjohns94when he shot a yak with his '76. That was impressive. .45-75 if i remember right. .50-95's gotta be something to see!

Any chance you could take a pic of it next to something like a model 92 or 94, so to get an idea on the size of it? There's a dealer in Canada that just started importing Chapparal, and once the wallet can handle it, I'm really thinking about getting a 76 (they have a "No BS" guarantee so I'm not worried about getting a lemon) - I'd like to get an idea of the scale of it.
They got a bunch of Chapparal's Colt 1873 clones in too - first I had of them making revolvers. Price is pretty good too.

Chuck,
No problem. I noticed that right next to the Kemira powder they listed IMR4198 with 28 grs. So at least that one is readily available.

Strange they don't list the velocity of this load though. Either they didn't, or I missed it.

Killer Kanuck , I will try to get a pic of it along side of another more common rifle for you . It is twice the size of a 92. Weight is 10.3 lb.
empty!! With the 28" barrel it balances just behind the rear sight.

Heck, if you missed, that big bullet would pull all the air away and suffocate 'em!

Yeah, I shoot it in my BP revolvers and single shots but my concern with levers is the mag tube since I don't get into those areas to clean.
