Most Accurate Levergun

Post by El Chivo »

With all these polls about favorite leverguns, it occured to me we haven't discussed accuracy. Which ONE shoots the best for you, and how good is it?

I want to test mine off the bench this summer with different loads, but my 44 mag will usually do 5 shots/3" at 100 yards if I do my part.

I was intrigued by the single-load vs. loaded magazine post on the .45-70

My 45-70 Guide Gun is the most accurate of my leverguns. With a scope, I can shoot three Speer 400 gr bullets under 1 moa.

Browning 1895 in 30-06 , byfar the most accurate. It's the only one I have that I can make 2 out of 3 holes touch at 100 yards .

Never owned one but I bet the model 88 Winchester and model 99 Savage would be at the top because of the one piece stock

I have had good luck finding and collecting a number of accurate lever actions. There are rifles that are accurate at the range and some that seem to do the job whenever called upon. I mean you know you are going to connect when you are using that rifle. This is my pick, a Marlin 336A in 30-30. Image[/img]

I've no doubt every one of them is more accurate than I am... I get about 1½-2" at 100 yards. Haven't tried the 1876 SRC or 336 .35 Rem at that range yet.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Rifle Caliber:
Marlin 30aw w/ 3-9x40 scope will shoot factory Federal 150gr into less than an inch at 100yds.

Pistol Caliber:

Marlin 1894CB Limited 45Colt w/ handload of 21gr of 2400 under a 250gr XTP will shoot less than 1.5" at 100yds (iron sights)

Rimfire:

Marlin 39a Mountie with CCI Mini Mag or CCI Stinger will shoot into less than an 1" at 50yds.

They are all more accurate than me.

But, I think that, in general, the POTENTIAL for "absolute" accuracy is highest in a Savage 99, BLR, or W1895 largely because of the ammunition used.

My best shooter is my Winchester 1895 .303 Brit, which shoots at or under 1 MOA with factory Winchester 180s (it's even a takedown).

My 71s are my least accurate rifles at about 3+/- MOA with handloads.

My W1894s of various calibers seem to shoot in the 1-1/2 to 2-1/2" range with the model 55 in 30 wcf being the most accurate of the bunch.

My Guide Gun and my Winchester 88 in .308 are 2 of my most accurate leverguns. The Guide Gun can make one BIG cloverleaf at 50 yds. The 88 can hold about an 1" at 100 yds.

No. Either the rain or something else always seems to interfere.

Sorry, no pics, but back in the '60s, my dad bought a model 88 in .284 win. as a closeout for $100, AND got the shop to throw in some dies.

With very painstaking handloading, he shot a .280 group at 100 yards with it. I was only about 10, but remember he had me and my cousin witness the target so he could send it in to some postal contest at the time. He was soundly ridiculed and his veracity questioned, but to steal a line, "Hell, I was there.", and both set up and retrieved the target ;)

My cousin head shot a garter snake with the same rifle at about 90 yards, and the head of a garter snake ain't very big.

Model 88 is the one, hands down.

Our blr's shoot much tighter groups than the other levers, but mostly on account of the scopes they wear. Altho the 99 savage and the Marlin 30-30 ai with their scopes shoot more than respectable groups.

BLR in 308, 2-7 Redfield scope, 1/2 inch group at 125 yards, 3 shot group. I shot the head off the thumb tack that was holding the target up with the fourth shot.

My 1946 Marlin 39a.

It shoots CCI Standard Velocity Long Rifle well under an inch @ 50yds with the issue iron sights.

Shots 4-9 were at 100 yards. Targets not recovered.

Shot 10 was 122 yards:
