Strength of Marlin 1894 in 45 Colt?

I have been shooting a load of 22.0 grains H110 over a 300 grain XTP in my 45 Colt chambered Redhawk and Rossi 92 for years. It has never shown any signs of high pressure.

The bottom line is that I now want a scope mounted lever gun in 45 colt and a Scout scope will not work for me.

How do you guys think the Marlin 1894 in 45 Colt would handle this round? Yes, I will back off and work up slowly but I don't want to buy the Marlin to find out it will not handle a load at least close to that level.

No one frets over the .44 Magnum in a Marlin 94. Equivalent loads in a .45 Colt operate at lower pressure levels than the .44, so I would not worry over loads that did not exceed the published "Ruger only" loads.

How well do those loads of yours work with the powder over the bullet?

QuickLoad thinks that load is under 30k psi so well within the Marlin's capabilities. Like you, I would not want to blithely put the same loads I use in a Redhawk or Rossi into a Marlin but your load should be just fine.

I use the same +P+ ammo in my Redhawk and 92 and have been for years.

Some clarification please. If you are talking just 45lc handguns I tend to agree. But, if that is a blanket statement, the marlin will NOT handle 454 casull pressures.

You can match the velocity you are getting from your handgun with a lesser load in the Marlin. You probably don't want to have two loadings to have to keep separate, so I would work up the most accurate load for the rifle and just use that in the handgun.

I think the point Nate is making is that you can push the 92 Rossi into 454 territory but the Marlin won't go there.

I followed that idea in a different caliber of model 92 and Ruger Super Redhawk pairing. It worked quite well. I used a slower powder and the rifle is happier, and the same load gives a little less velocity than H110 does in the pistol. I can fire more rounds out of the pistol with less fatigue in any range session that way. The rifle has a slightly different kick with the slower powder. It is less of a sharp punch in the shoulder. More of a shove. The accuracy is better with the slower powder and the velocity is higher. That is just how it worked for me, and your guns will tell you what they like. The fun of testing and finding what works is one of the perks of reloading.
