Got an Elk Tag!

Post by jkbrea »

Drew a cow/calf tag this year. I posted last year that I had to go to a different area of Wyoming after 25 years hunting the same unit. Available tags in certain areas drastically changed a couple years back. I suspect it's due to wolves moving further south. I went in blind last year and kind of just wandered around. It was a beautiful area. I didn't get an elk but still had a lot of fun. I even had a little run in with a grizzly! I posted pics of it here. (well, it's paw print anyways) viewtopic.php?f=1&t=67386&p=774880#p774880

My brother drew a general tag so I'll still go to our usual unit near Jackson for the first week to help him, then north of Pinedale for the second week. After having that grizzly run towards me, I felt so under gunned. I had a .308, a S&W .44 with 240 SJFP and bear spray. I thought it was enough until I saw the size of that thing. Thankfully I spooked him too and he took off into the timber mid-stride. I'll be taking a 30-06 or 45-70. My sidearm will be loaded with 305 grain Buffalo Bore or similar. I'm trying to get a slow running friend to go with me.

It's funny as we get older things change. When I first started elk hunting, my brother and I would pack everything on our backs, hike in a few miles and set up a small tent. In later years we got ATV 4x4s and drove in with a 10x10 tent, ice chests with food, water and firewood. Now it's an RV with heat, TV, propane firepits, hot water, and cold beer. We still quarter and pack the elk out on pack frames though. I'm too cheap to pay an outfitter to drag it.

Glad to hear that for you. I quit applying for or free tag here in Arkansaw. As I got older Ikind of worried I might get one. I can't hunt that country up on the Buffalo river country.
