Sources for wholesale/bulk lead alloy

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I'm looking for good sources of lead alloy for my bullet casting - I'm willing to purchase in bulk.

In general, what are the best places to look for?

Anybody have any good leads in the Austin, Texas area?

I'm thinking industrial metal dealers, plumbing supply?

I know there are suppliers that service the bullet casting companies out there and I've read Mike Venturino commenting about buying bulk....

Any help appreciated.

Wheel weights are no longer available as the companies that sell them give discounts to the tire stores for turning them in....

Thank you gentlemen.

I'd probably want 20-1 and something equivalent to wheel weight alloy which I know has antimony in it.

I hate to say this but you might try your local scrap yards. Mine had about 2500 lbs of both ww's and pure lead, most of it already in ingots. The cost is $.75 per pound right now.

midstates cast bullets in Kansas might be a place. Back when it was MidKansas, they sold alloy ingots.

Silly question, but how do you find a "scrap yard" - do they list in the Yellow Pages? Under what?

Check under recycling.

We have a few in town, been planning to stop by. Thought it was a good idea.

If you have any medical equipment supply, maintainance companies or such near you, they throw out the pure lead blankets on MRI's, CT's and X-Ray equipment everytime they open 'em up. I got three hundred pounds of rolled up, pure lead 1/4" thick blanket off an X-Ray machine from the scrap out of the back at GE Med(could have gotten more, but I was worried about my car handling the weight) that they pay to get rid of.

Anyone use old window sash weights? Seems like there must be tons of those around. Were those lead or some other metal?

The ones in my 1926 house seem to be cast iron.

I thank you for reminding me that I need to replace several sash cords.
Sincerely,

Hobie
