Monte Walsh

Some time back I asked the question which version was preferred, Tom Selleck or Lee Marvin. Someone suggested that I try to obtain the book.
After quite some tracking I managed to obtain a second hand copy and have been reading it for a couple of weeks, almost finished.
While not really the same as the movies, what a great read.
Whoever suggested this book, thank you very much. I really enjoyed it.

The movie only covers a couple chapters of the book. The book covers Monte's life from a young teenager on. It has some of the best descriptions of ranch life and cowboying in the 1880's that have been written.

I have both movies. I like the bucking horse scene in Lee Marvin's movie the best. I can't say I one is better than the other. They both are good.

I like both versions equally. Both very sad. I haven't read the book but Teddy Roosevelt's Ranch Life is very good for descriptions of ranching in Montana during the late 19th century.

Teddy's Elkhorn Ranch was indeed in the North Dakota Badlands. Unfortunately the Boone and Crockett Club started the "Teddy Roosevelt Memorial Ranch" in Montana, and now many people think it was once Teddy's.

Don't know if I'm the one who recommended the book, but I usually do. I haven't seen a movie yet that could hold a candle to a book. Perhaps I was born with enough imagination that I can "see" the word picture the author paints. Plus, you can go back and reread a book in parts or completely anytime you want, anywhere you want.

Ok, I have to admit that today if you have a cell signal you can stream most movies, but they still can't ever cover all the aspects of a book.

Oh, by the way of the two movies, Marvin's portrayal was the best. And, he did it decades before Selleck so the filming technology was not what's available today.

Yep, I was the one recommending the book, and you're very welcome. I'm very glad you enjoyed it! The book is a must for real Monte Walsh fans.

Depends... I felt the book far better gave the back story, which was better detailed more than the movie... I think it might have been my second read of the book that did it for me...

I will have to search Half Price Books for it. I have recently obtained some of Capstick's books there, and got a book by W.D.M. Bell, as well as The Man eaters of Tsavo. Secondhand bookstores can be a great place to search.
