Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
Hopkins and Allen made those. I had the rifle in .45 caliber. Since ,there have been several other makers. One (rifle) in .58 and .62 cal. With slow RB twist either .58 or .62 could reach 2,000 fps. A real stopper for sure. A Google search should reveal it's maker.BlaineG wrote:Was it T/C that made those? Lyman? I think you could get it in .50, or .54......Very cool shooter.

My "Google Foo" is pretty good, but I can't find the one I'm looking for. This was back in the early 80s and were the only BP handgun that would qualify for Indiana deer hunting...They had a more modern look than the usual replicas.... I was a fairly popular brand that made lots of ML rifles.Chuck 100 yd wrote:Hopkins and Allen made those. I had the rifle in .45 caliber. Since ,there have been several other makers. Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
NUMRICH Arms had those underhammer pistols and rifles. BOTH are the ONLY totally American designed guns. My old H&A HERITAGE model 45 caliber is a tackdriver and a killer of profound proportion I kid you NOT !

Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
My twin brother has many more muzzleloaders than I do (like 9X as many, and I have 3...), and he's had some great fun and success using his underhammer rifle and pistol. They are pretty cool and easy to load and shoot -- just watch the hand holding the forearm so you don't get too close to the action and pick up some nasty burns.
That WILL get your attention!
But the good news is you'll only do it once...
He got a deer with his rifle years ago and just uses the old "boot pistol" for plinking, but either one always attracts some attention at the outdoor range when he brings them.
As for me???
I have resort to what Grizz suggested......................

One other useful tip...
For hunting with an underhammer -- make sure the nipple fits the cap tightly, so it doesn't fall down and off the gun.
That will ruin your hunt!

Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
I find the under hammers to be very cool, I`ve built a couple, even made a under hammer breech loader that used pre charged cases if that`s what one would call them.

Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
I no longer have the paperwork that came with my T/C Renegade Kit I put together in 1981, but IIRC a .54 RB with a max of 120gr Pyrodex P was just under 2000 fps....It was also wildly inaccurate. 95-100 grains was 2 or 3 moa....Buck Elliott wrote:"2000 fps" with black powder..?

Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
Yep Buck, my H&A HERITAGE 45 rifle sat right at 2000fps with 75grs of FFG under a tight patched ball and was highly accurate out to 100 yards after which it went pretty well kaput.Buck Elliott wrote:"2000 fps" with black powder..?

Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
Buck, 2,000 fps is obtainable with long barreled Kentucky style rifles with slow twist and round ball.Buck Elliott wrote:"2000 fps" with black powder..?

Caliber is not a factor. It can be done with a .60 as easily as with a .36. With proper twist rate and patched ball they can be very accurate.
Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
When I was young in CT black powder deer was Round Ball only. I bought a 54 cal Sharon 1-72 twist barrel for my TC Hawken. 120 gr of ffg and a 235 gr .535 ball was 2000 FPS. What a deer hammer!
I always liked the H&A under hammers and they came in all cal's from .36 up if I remember right.

Re: ML Underhammer Handgun.
Do an online search. There are several small makers out there.
