Question for Marlin gurus

Ok I thought I knew the answer to this question but something I read has me wondering. How many calibers were the Marlin 336A available in? I know 30/30, 32 special, and 35 Remington. Any additional info? Thanks. Tom

Those 3 are the only factory offerings for the Marlin Model 336A.

The .219 Zipper chambering was available in a Model 336, but AFAIK only in the 20" barreled 2/3 magazine Sporting Carbine (M336SC).

That said, I'm sure that some folks out there have an aftermarket re-bored or rebarreled M-336A in 25-35 or .38-55.

FWIW, M-336SC's look a lot like a 336A, what with the 2/3 magazines on both - so IMO what you saw was either a mis-described SC, or an SC with a 336A Zipper barrel (the actual model description is on the barrel, and not the receiver)

Unless I'm mistaken, they made a few in .44 Magnum I think.

Like Pete says, those three calibers only....in the Three Thirty Six A. The Two Nineteen Zipper was in the Sporting Carbine variation of which Three Thousand and Thirty Two were made. I had three at one time but the first one got traded for a Ninety Nine in Three Fifty Eight. I burnt the barrel out on the second.......only got twenty four hundred out of it... and sold it for dang near scrap and I have just this one left. It's in like new condition with only a couple of hundred out of it. The barrel is very thick and short...twenty inches long and .seventy fifty at the muzzle. Shoots ten shots in one inch at one hundred meters.

I chalked the lettering so you can see it. Also included another picture of the new mould. Sure like showing it off. No one else around here appreciates this neat stuff.

And on the original note -- there are two of those 219 SC's on Gunbroker right now. But for some reason the sellers (and some bidders) seem to think they are worth a lot of $s.

One of the issues with advertisers is they tend to lump all 336 style guns into the "336A" designation. There indeed were a lot of various calibers built on the 336 style frame, including the newer Model 1895 in .45-70, so often those less informed or precise will simply list their gun as a 336A, instead of the correct marking.
There are also some rollstamps used by Marlin that would indicate a different model than what the gun is. I've seen numerous 336ADL marked guns with plain wood and not ADL features. I've also seen guns with other weird rollstamps that didn't add up to the features on the particular 336 style receiver. It's not that Marlin was haphazard about their assembly, but more likely it is just a case of using up parts and not wasting money.

The reason I asked is I believe I should have a complete set of 336A's, a set of 36 A's and set of S/C's. I have 336A in 32 special, and 35rem, still looking for 30/30. Have 36 in 30/30, and 32 special. Have S/C in 35 and 32 special( I think). May take 10 years but I will complete it someday. I got a thing for that short magazine thing, 444, 45-70, 375 Winchester, and the above.
