Anyone load 410?

Post by GunnyMack »

I put in a bid at Gunbroker on a CZ Ringneck 410. My Red Label 28 just seems too easy for these stocked pheasants.
Does anybody load 410's? I'd be interested in your pet loads.

Those CZ's are sharp! I've been looking at .410 doubles too. I have three single shots, my Enfields are blast but always wanted an o/u in .410. I'm really interested in what the other's say about reloading them.

I have a MEC 700 that I converted years ago to 410. Can't even remember last time I loaded any... Have couple hundred empties, plenty of components just where to start.

I like shooting birds with my Rossi Rio Grande.

I've had fishy-game cops called om me a couple of times for having a "rifle" out in bird-only areas...

There's usually an array of .410 loading stuff on Flea Bay....Right now, there's a 3", and a 2.5" with no bids on them....And, that was just page one.....

Watch those auctions. If they are like the auctions I watched over the past 10 years or so, they will sell for over $100 ea... and probably to someone in Europe.

H4227 will get 3/4oz going.

Crow hunting- have not done that in a long time!
H110 & 2400 I tried in the past, think I'll try Lilgun next.
Club I hunt only allows break open guns, hence the CZ I bid on, otherwise I'd shoot my Hi-Standard.

If you look on Paco's web site he makes a Lee Loader type loader.

Let me borrow that loader for 15, or 20 years, and I'll share my best loads with you.

Sure just as soon as I get a couple hundred loaded!
I started my loading career with a MEC 700, that got too time consuming trying to keep up with my Trap shooting habit, graduated to a Grabber. When I got my first 410 I converted the 700.
I haven't loaded for 410 in at least 25 years! Spent couple hours getting the kinks out of it yesterday.

I load a lot of different .410's. Mainly just for grins. Favorite powder is WC 820.

The trick with loading the 410 is a good crimp which due to no flexability in payload length equals finding a good combo of powder volume, wad with a standard payload. Hulls are really only good for 2 firings, the factory and one reload, after that pattern size starts tapering off quickly. If your running an open fixed choke gun a 3-5th reload can tighten up the pattern. I think below 71/2 shot pattern density starts to leave holes and there is no added benifit to 3" shells beyond 10-15 yards.

I've pretty much settled on 296, H110 and lil gun for powders. Wads I stick with rem for rem, win for win except when the crimp is loose then opt for federal wads.

I haven't loaded 410 in about 12 years but shot skeet competitively with about 2 to 2.5k 410 shells annually.

I don't know if this Cheap Charlie trick works with .410 or not, but as a broke 19 years old with a 16 gauge SxS I'd load them shells until the end would not crimp at all. I'd throw a hand-cut thin wad on top, and a piece of scotch tape....It probably wouldn't cycle in anything, but they chambered, and ejected in my SxS.....It was tough shooting skeet with a Mod/Full double.
