OT - Check OutThis Gripmaker's Work

Post by Pete44ru »

I think any handgunner would appreciate this link.

Take a peek at this new Ruger .357 Blackhawk 50th Anniversary gun, that a gripmaker named Cary (from CA) made the grips for (he makes grips from all sorts of wood):

He does make some great looking grips/stocks.

I'll agree they are nice but he only does them for Rugers. At least at this time. I understand why, Ruger grips are fairly standard and easy to size. Colt SAA's on the other hand are hand finished and end up all sorts of different dimensions.

kimwcook,

Cary Chapman (CLC Custom Grips) also custom fits many of his grips to the customers frames if needed or the customer desires.
That is how my American Holly grips were made. I sent him the grip frame and he fitted them.

As consistent at Ruger grip frames are, there is still a lot of variation. Especially between the aluminum, steel, and stainless steel grip frames.

Joe, those are beautiful grips. I really like how the holly wood looks; Cary does make beautiful grips.

Cary does an excellent job with his grips and is a pleasure to deal with. His off the shelf grips tend to fit much better than aftermarket grips and his custom fitting is near-perfect. He handles special requests easily and can send you pictures of his blanks for you to pick one out. If he didn't do a good job, I wouldn't own 14 sets!

Wow.

I particularly like the white grips... Are they faux ivory?
I have seen Narwhal ivory grips before, all spirally and stuff.

Pretty cool!

Scott64a,

If you're referring to my grips I posted above they are wood. As I stated just above the pictures it's American Holly wood. I've heard the nickname to this wood is American Ivory.
They are actually a bit more yellow in the flesh, or wood than the pictures show.

I started seeing his grips on ebay a few years ago. He makes grips from materials that are more commonly used on custom knives than on guns. They are great looking grips and I like the variety of materials. I referred him to one of the shooting forums but after a few people were less than kind to him I think he backed off. So you guys please be good to him.

Ummmmmm, I believe you are getting us confused with somebody else.
I don't think we'd ever sink low enough to be unkind to an artist like Cary Chapman.

At least I wouldn't.

Holly is a great looking wood and a viable ivory substitute.

Hmmmm, since he doesn't do Colts, Where would one buy American Holly in a large enough chunk to make a pair of one-piece grips for one's '51 Navy?

Dunno. I'm about to send the grip frame of my Cimarron 1872 Open Top to Bar S for some TruIvory.

I've been contemplating that also, but w/three to have done, and wanting to start 'em *they've veen off @ rge gunsmith for 3 months - my fault, not his), I thought I might give tghios a whirl. Worst I could do is make a small chunk for the fireplace!
