45-90 loads

time to fire up this new 86, looking for a smokeless load for a 405gr jacketed.

Hopefuly somebody has a Varget load they could share.

Congrats on that .45-90. A very fine caliber indeed. I have not tried Varget in the .45-90 nor have I shot jacketed through mine. I have shot the 405gr. Mt Baldy flat point on top of a case full, 61grs of 2495 with good results. I would think one could load a case full of Varget in a newly manufactured 86 without issue except some what low pressure. My one concern is could one achieve enough pressure with a case full of Varget to properly obturate the jacketed projectile? Might need a faster powder. 1886.

KirkD and CRS both have recipes for the 45-90. I don't have their permission to post their work so I'll wait for them to speak up. It shouldn't be long.

I do not use 405s, preferring to stick with lighter hunting bullets. The long time load for my 90 yr old Winchester has been 64 grains IMR3031 and a 300 grain bullet. Either Barnes Original jacketed or Oregon Trail Laser Cast hard lead. Living in CA, I now must load Barnes Triple Shock all copper bullets for my .45 caliber rifles. At 1 dollar each, I won't be wasting many of those.

Assuming your rifle is newly manufactured, you could check the max. load data for the .45-70 for the combos you wish to use in the various reloading manuals. I would start with a max. load for the .45-70 as a starting place for the .45-90. I would work until I achieved the velocity that is optimum for the projectile I was shooting. A new 86 is certainly able to handle the heaviest Marlin 1895 loads with ease. I just checked the Speer #13 manual. It shows 58grs of H335, W/W brass, CCI 250 primers and the 400gr flat point clocking at 1900fps out of a 22" barreled Marlin 1895. This load produces 28,000 cup. If I were evenly remotely talented in math I could compare the case capacity of the cartridges and work out the necessary formulas. Good Luck. 1886.

Looks like Montanan gave some good info. Those loads look a little long to function in the 86 though. 1886.

Always check your OAL for your Leverguns, the provided load data is for the Leverguns in particular as when the load was first established was for the 45-90 Express which was for the Winchester in a 300-gr bullet.

I also have data for the 45-90 Sharps ie 45-2.4 cartridge.

I have never used Varget.
I am now playing with 5744 with 325 and 405 cast bullets, but have not loaded any .405 jacketed bullets. Some of the information in the posts above mine should provide you plenty of options.

thanks, I have a half of can of H4895 and a little #7, that should get me started anyways.
