Rebarreling a Rossi 92

Post by Thunder50 »

Just wondering what it might cost and the difficulties to rebarrel a Rossi 92. Its currently in 44-40 caliber, but thinking of changing it to 38-40.

Any idea of what the thread size is on the barrel shank?

IDK, but I would think it much less expensive (if an appropriate liner can be located) to have the existing barrel bored/re-lined to .38-40.

OTOH, if a used/take-off .38-40 Model 1892/92 barrel could be found, the job can be done for little or no cost above the cost of the OEM barrel (and a little elbow grease).

BTW - Since .44-40 Rossi M-92's aren't exactly prolific, yet desirable to many folks, another option may be to locate/buy a .38-40, then sell your .44-40.

As Pete mentioned the best option is to reline an existing Rossi barrel. No one offers a drop-in 38-40 barrel for the Rossi's. So, it would be a custom barrel blank with all the work involved to finish the outside. The easiest route is start with one of the octagon Rossi's. Those barrel are large enough to bore straight through for the new 40 cal. liner. If you plan on a round barrel carbine the front section would have to be bored smaller than the rear and then the liner turned to match. This is because the dia up front is too small for a bore through.

This one started as a 45lc octagon short rifle and is now 38-40

BTW, over the years Rossi has used two different stub sizes. Thread counts the same the dias are different.
