Ran across a few of these yesterday and can't find out any info on it,anyone have any info you can share?
I would really like to see the rifle that you shoot them from!
Thanks..
That "40-45" is not a cartridge designation. It is a "basic" case that can be reformed to make a variety of obsolete cartridges. Another company that made "basic" cases was Bell.
All depends on the case length. As noted, the .45 Basic case can be trimmed to several cartridges. Not trimmed, it is the .45-120 Sharps. Common calibers are that one, plus the .45-110 Sharps and .45-90.
I have a Pedersoli reproduction of the Sharps 1874 in .45-120 Sharps. It is a fun gun (or small piece of artillery, given the lob of the round!).

Just think what a sore shoulder if you could load that up to 'Ruger No.1" pressure levels...

my boss buys houses on the side and rents them,he showed me the cartridge and my eyes lit up,I said you need to take me to this place! The basement is full off old reloading equipment and the gentleman that lives up stairs is to old to get down to the basement anymore he said my boss can have anything he wants but he's not interested so hopefully I can get some of it. The old fellow wasn't home when we were there I wanted to ask him if he still has the gun that fired that shell.
