Poor wabbit.

Post by Nath »

Went after a rabbit with the .45 smooth rifle yesterday.
I had it loaded with just 20grns of black powder and a ball sat on wads.
This is a close range loading and I have never tested it beyond 25yards.
First rabbit was shot at 15strides or so.

The second was after a heavy down poor which we had to shelter from. We were on our way back when I spotted a rabbit with is rump towards me and I wanted the gun empty.
The problem was it was fifty to sixty yards away and as I mentioned earlier I have never shot this load that far!
I aimed very hi via the foresight and touched it off.
I witnessed the ball hit the deck in front and bounce into the rabbit entering the testicles fist and stopping under the skin of the right shoulder.
I was quite amazed by this to put it mildly!

The photos.

Poor little fellow indeed!

Odd: I was thinking of Fudd's "kill da wabbit" chant just the other day, when some mangy easter bunny was handing out treats at one of my kids' classes. I don't know why I did; it was nice of whoever was in there to do that, but there was the tune in my head. I guess I find it all a rather silly tradition.

Five more grains of 3F should make it a real bunny load. No patch on the ball, just a wad? That should work as long as the ball is a snug fit. Good shootin pard!

Nath, I shot a Blacktail doe with my .45 ML rifle and round ball once. Loaded with 70 gr. 3F the ball entered at the base of the neck, skidded along the backbone full length and exited out the opposite rear ham. The rifle was a TC Hawken in the very rare .45 caliber. I have been told they never made them in
.45??? I bought it used so maybe someone had rebarreled it. At any rate, it was just too heavy to pack around so I sold it and replaced it with a long rifle in .50 caliber and a thinner barrel.

Good shotin' Nath, those .45 smooth bores do shoot remarkably well but boy do have to watch for ricochets....

Gutting him would have been awfully messy.

A slightly straighter shot and you might have turned him into a squirrel

It wasn't as bad as it was expecting! I guess the ball was down to low airgun speeds!

That was one unlucky rabbit. I wouldn't carry one of his feet for luck that's for sure.

Good point Nath. I doubt there is any reason to it except for tradition.

I read a story to my youngest, (6 years) recently where the king's magician turned the chicken which laid the golden eggs into a rabbit which the king released into the wild because he didn't know it now laid the golden eggs. The story was that now children hunt for eggs in the forest hoping to find a gold one. He already knows the real story of Easter so I let this one slide.

Seems strange being 77 with a 6 year old but he who was a Grandchild is our son now since we adopted him along with his brother and sister.
