Had one, 1974 Mazda RX4, talk about a screaming engine! Loved gas stations though!Old Ironsights wrote:You leave my Wankel out if this...
The other thing was it was designed to use oil, about a quart per 1000 miles, to protect the rotor tip seals.
As it only had about a 4 quart capacity, the dealer chief mechanic advised that they had a lot of people ruin engines because they would not check the oil, recommendation was to check every other tank of fuel, or once a week as a minimum.
But a screamer, and a manual 4 speed so a lot of fun!

Yup....Mine looked like a skeeter fogger when you first started it up. It was a 240Z, and BMW killer, though. Wicked fast.TWHBC wrote:Had one, 1974 Mazda RX4, talk about a screaming engine! Loved gas stations though!Old Ironsights wrote:You leave my Wankel out if this...

Re: THe opposite of an Alternative Lifestyle...
No it wasn't. The 240Z was a Datsun, later to become Nissan. Punctuation is important! First Wankel I ever saw was on top of an outdrive unit for a boat... supposedly it developed 300hp, it was a screamer! I had an Alpha Romeo, which was a 240Z, BMW & Porsche killer. The 6-cyl Porsche's were a problem on the straight-aways, but once we got into the curves, they were toast! Either the Mazda RXs that I saw weren't Wankels, or the drivers were milquetoasts!!!BlaineG wrote:Yup....Mine looked like a skeeter fogger when you first started it up. Sorry, I happen to know better. If a Porsche was lagging in the corners, the driver didn't know pelosi about trailing throttle oversteer. I'm talking about the BMW 1600s, and 2002s. The RX4 was not good on corners, but good for 120 plus on the straight. I'd lag a bit on the corners, and more than catch up on the straights.Griff wrote:No it wasn't. '66 Guila Ti, 4-door sedan... a total sleeper! Drove like a skateboard, front engine, & IIRC, a rear 5 speed trans, 4 wheel disc brakes... but aye GAWD were tune-ups a headache! In-line 4, twin horizontal Webbers, DOHC and valve adjustments required removal and shim stock! Mine had been upgraded to "Super" engine components.BlaineG wrote:Sorry, I happen to know better. Which Alpha did you have?
Top Speed was rated at 115mph, but sure got there in a hurry. Wife traded it off for an "Austin"... I was overseas, and I thought it was the Austin Mini, but she got the Austin-America... talk about a piece of Pelosi! I'd sure like to have the Alpha back! Quite rare now.

That was indeed a real sleeper....We would have had an interesting time on some back roads....Griff wrote:'66 Guila Ti, 4-door sedan... a total sleeper!
