lyman 56a receiver sight
on the winchester model 71 aside from the bolt peep which i have on one rifle they offered as an option the lyman w71 receiver sight which about 1948 became a standard item. my question is what is the difference between this lyman w71 and the lyman no. 56a receiver sight? thanks john
Re: lyman 56a receiver sight
.
AFAIK
The Lyman 56A receiver peep sight had a shorter horizontal aperture holder bar, since it was made for mounting on receivers thinner than Winchester model 71/86/1886 rifles - like the Winchester 1894/94's.
The Lyman 56W71 & 66A receiver peep sights had longer horizontal aperture holder bars than the 56A, so that in the middle of it's windage adjustment range, the aperture would be located over the bore C/L of the wider Model 71/86/1886 receivers.
The 56A could mount on Winchester Model 71 receivers, but the horizontal bar isn't long enough to zero the rifle w/o the aperture at the extreme end of the bar, instead of the middle of the bar.
(the mid-bar position allows a wider range of windage adjustment to achieve zero.)
The standard rear sights for pre-war (WWII) Model 71 rifles were the No. 98A bolt-peep or the 22K barrel-mounted open sight.
After 1947, only the 22K barrel-mounted open sight was standard.
Early production Model 71 rifles could be special ordered drilled and tapped for a Lyman 56W71 ( or a Redfield No. 70) receiver mounted sight.
In 1955, the Lyman 66A replaced the 56W71.

afaik thank you very much for clearing that up for me. john
Re: lyman 56a receiver sight
I've used the narrower sight on an 1886, it was a bit off center of the adjustment range, but had plenty of room to sight in. It didn't seem like there was any danger of running out of adjustment range to sight in. I've used 56's on several Winchesters, I don't pay much attention to exactly which model they were supposed to fit, and they've all worked on 94's, 92's and 86's. I may have lucked out, but from the experience with the 86, it didn't seem like it was a real problem.
First one I bought, the guy was bummed that it was for a 95, (wide receiver), as he had wanted to put it on a 94. Apparently he never tried it, just looked up the number. I had no problem with it on a 94. The differences haven't seemed that great.
BTW does anyone have any part for 56's? I have half of one, don't recall which half.
