Older Mossberg Lever Actions 472 / 479 / 679
Anyone know differences between the older Mossberg lever action rifles. From looking around the internet I have figured out first letter P is pistol grip and S is straight grip. Second letter c is carbine lenght barrel and r is rifle length. What does that a/b mean for the third letter? I have also noticed 472 has safety lever while 479 has push button. What are other differences?

Nope - The only Mossberg levergun I had experience with was a .22LR Palomino.
I do know that the Mossberg model 472PCA,PCB,SCA,SCB,PRA,PRB and SBA were 1st introduced in the 1974 Mossberg annual catalog.
Mossberg changed the models to 479PCA,PCB,SCA and SCB in the 1980 Mossberg annual catalog.
The design was reworked to make it safer ?
Both versions were advertised as bling available in both .30/30 Winchester and .35 Remington.

I have a 472AR, if I can read my notebook right, (I scribbled something out and wrote AR in its place) and it is what the Blue Book calls a brush gun. It has a straight stock and an 18" barrel with a full magazine. It was only made from 1974 to 1976. l've never seen another one.
I looked for it tonight but it was too dark to see in the back of the safe
, It's gotta be around here somewhere!!

From looking at old sale adds on different sights 3rd letter is caliber. A is 3030 B is 35 Remington. I saw a listing for 472sba brush gun but did not have other details. I also saw some with saddle ring. There was a special run made to commemorate Roy Rogers 479RR that had gold barrel band and trigger.
