What's on your Thanksgiving menu ?

Post by jhrosier »

Happy Thanksgiving to all !

I talked with the Wife about it a couple weeks ago, and we decided to eat in a restaurant for Thanksgiving this year. There is a place in the next town that has a good reputation for their meals.
We've always had home made dinner for the 40 years we've been together, so this is some thing new.
It is just the two of us and it seems too much trouble to spend much of the day preparing for the meal.

I will, of course, miss the couple of days of leftovers.

Anyone else going to a restaurant for Thanksgiving?

I think so. A church down the street my brother attends is having a Thanksgiving dinner for anyone who wants to come, so we might go there. Ours had our services last night.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. We have a lot to be thankful for!!

I'm fixing a basic turkey/dressing/taters/gravy/corn/rolls/shrimp cocktail/cheesecake/ice cream meal.

I'm at work for another couple of hours, but then plan on the traditional turkey dinner, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, rolls and 3 different kinds of pies. I'm thankful as I will be in misery later, and not everybody will have that luxury. Oh, I forgot, the tradition of passing the Templeton Rye around in the evening will also occur. Any whiskey, no matter how good, and I don't get along, so this happens only once a year, but my FIL insists.

Yesterday I went to Soulman's BBQ and picked up a selection of meats and fixins'! So... today we're having warmed up leftovers... For many of our 45 years my wife has fixed a traditional stuffed turkey and homemade mashed potatoes, green beans and other Thanksgiving delights... but for just 3 of us, (son is also home this year), I figured I'd give her the morning off... tho' she still got up around 4 am... And there's so much less to clean up after all the mixin', cookin', baking and general mess in the kitchen! Which she would have tried to "guilt" me into helping with! Probably successfully too!

While my Green-eyed Monster & I are empty-nesters now, for the past 50 years our family has always celebrated a Thanksgiving Day meal together - only, for the past 5 years, our children & their immediate families & us (10 bodies), gather at one of their home's (the kids work out where, each year).

This year, the all-day (appetizers 1st, salad 2nd, the main courses 3rd; then desert last) menu consisted of:

Appetizers:

Mulled Cider & a Red Wine
Shrimp Cocktail w/homemade cocktail sauce
Sliced Cheese, sliced Pepperoni & crackers
Homemade (warm) Chili & Cream Cheese dip w/nacho's

Salad: Lettuce, tomato, onions, cucumbers, black olives, croutons & dressing

Italian bread/butter

Entree's:
Roast Turkey (22lbs) w/Stuffing made with venison sausage & wild mushrooms (hen-of-the-woods)
Baked Venison tenderloin medallions (4 tenderloins, sliced)
Baked Stuffed (Ricotta cheese) pasta shells (30 or so) in red sauce & melted mozzarella cheese over the top

Veggie's:
Baked Butternut Squash w/apples casserole
Baked French-style green bean casserole with fried onion crust topping
Smashed potatoes w/garlic powder, butter & grated cheese

Dessert's:
Homemade Apple pie
Homemade Chocolate Cream pie (chocolate pudding pie) w/whipped cream topping
Homemade Pumpkin pie

Various family members (usually female) make their choice of veggies and/or desserts; my wife & I made the Turkey stuffing & stuffed shells yesterday (& re-warmed them at/for today's dinner).

EVERYBODY got a doggie bag of their favorite leftovers to take home - even the doggie. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving to all ! !

Me and the little woman will be mooching off the Sis-in-law and her family again this year. She has Thanksgiving and we have Christmas every year. There will be,as always, an abundance of the most delicious food.
