Light Rust Removal

What are your favorite methods for removing light surface rust from a blued finish? I usually use 0000 steel wool and Kroil but I'm sure that there are better ways that won't thin the finish as much. Is there such a thing as copper or brass wool?

There is brass wool available, I think the kitchen Chore pads are copper.
I usually just use fine steel wool and a light oil.
Flitz is a polishing cream that will remove light rust also.

I've used a small brass brush, sort of like a tooth brush to remove a little light rust on mil. surplus rifles. Worked well and didn't seem to hurt the finish any. haven't tried it on anything else though.

I use Metal Glow or Flitz on my fingers to rub surface rust. If it wont get it off, then I switch to the same product with 0000 steel wool. Just finished doing the latter to a friend's 1947 vintage 39a, which had rust pitting on the barrel that felt like sandpaper, and looked ugly.
It now looks like almost new, and is smooth as a baby's behind. Bluing wasn't hurt at all, and even looks better than before.-Vall

Brownell's has bronze wool, I wouldn't be without some.

Some years ago at a gun show I bought some pads that I was told were nickel wool. They are the best thing Iâ€™ve used to take rust off with minimal effect on the bluing. They are very course but you can use them very aggressively without any scratching. They seem to last as Iâ€™m still using the same ones. I donâ€™t know of any place to get them today.

Dennis, Amway Scrub Buds are great for light rust removal. They are made of a soft stainless steel like kitchen scrub pads. I bought a box of three buds about twenty years ago and still have one new one in the box. Use with oil same as steel wool.

I used 0000 steelwool and Rem-oil with great success.

The 9422 has been spotting-up for awhile, slowly but surely, and it is gonna need more aggressive action sad to say.
