It's a long story but my wife's dad died shortly before we were married. The estate pretty much went to her step mom and there is some history there.

After nine years we were able to purchase some things from the estate. The wife really wanted things that would have meant something to her dad and would remind her of him. We also wanted things to pass to our son.

Out of the collection we got an early model 1892 that has been refinished, a 100th anniversary Browning 1896 and a Browning over/under that I believe is from the the mid 1950's

On the 1896 there is a spot where it looks like tape was used to hold the saddle ring (or protect the engraving.) unfortunately it appears to have etched into the finish. Any suggestions on how to clean it? I hit it with oil and a rag and that is about it.

The rifle you're referring to as a Model 1895 is a Hi-Grade Model 1886/86, made by Miroku for Winchester.

That rifle has a tube magazine with the loading gate in the RH side of the receiver; the Model 1895 has a vertical magazine that looks like a readily-detachable mag, but isn't.

The shotgun and 1892 for sure.

There was a fair amount of residue in the barrel of the shotgun so I know it had regular use. I am pretty sure that the 1892 has not been fired since it was restored.

The 1896 is unfired, it may stay that way for a while longer - but I am sure it will be used!

Be sure to use it (the M-86).

About 20 years ago, I bought a new standard-grade M-86EL (Extra Light) & used it for one season, before my friendly FFL had a likewise new Hi-Grade M-86EL (w/blued, engraved & inlaid receiver) which he allowed my full purchase price of my standard grade towards.

Since the difference was only $300 for the upgrade, it took me all of 10 seconds to decide/do it.

I really enjoyed the fru-fra during those quiet times, when game wasn't moving much.

I was reluctant to D/T the Hi-Grade's tang for a new Marble's tang sight, so I simply attached the tang sight using only the new/longer tang screw.

I shot/hunted that rifle for 5 seasons/years w/o any issues with the sight moving, etc - it worked because the underside of the tang sight had a matching concavity with the tang's convex profile (but I made sure to check the tang screw for tightness prior to every outing).
