OT - Tutt's Canadian Friend and his 454

Post by CowboyTutt »

Hey guys, my friend Moki in Canada sent me a link to him shooting his custom 454 Ruger SBH at a home-made bear target. I was so impressed with his video, I thought I would share it with you. The first 6 rounds are 45 Colt s with 300gr XTP's @ 1280fps and the second group of 6 are 454 Casull with 300gr XTP-Mag's @ 1450fps. This is impressive fast shooting with such a heavy caliber.

The gun is a very special one built by a gunsmith by the name of Gunnar in British Columbia. He designed the front rib. Gunnar makes the only shortened SRH's that actually look right. Here are some pics:

Moki also added Crimson Trace Laser Grips. He had to grind the top rear bolt hole area down (look in the first pic) as it had a high spot. It hit so hard into his thumb joint that after shooting 20 – 25 rounds he couldn't use his hand for a month or two. Moki spends a lot of time in the backwoods, and this is his protection. If memory serves, the holster is from Bob Mernickle although I forget which one he uses.

I have a 454 Raging Bull with an 8 1/2 inch barrel, but I do not think I could shoot it as fast or as well as my friend Moki.

Tutt,

Sorry to be off topic but do you happen to know what kind of knife your friend was carrying during the filming? Was it a Cold Steel SRK?

Tutt,
Is it legal now for Canadiens to carry the Redhawk into the woods? It seems that Kirk D. posted a thread over the weekend that sounded to me like a handgun must be ancient or the ammunition obsolete to carry up north.

On this link (same page as the .454 video),

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVKmHaNS ... re=related

it looks like the guy is walking backwards on a dirt road, carrying a five gallon bucket, and carrying a cocked DA revolver; unsure if finger stays out of the trigger guard or not (the gun waves around alot).

Now, I've never been chased by a bear, but I think I would not leave the gun cocked for that long of a walk. Would you guys (who live in bear country) do that? If so, then what is the point of a DA revolver vs. a SA?

Hi guys that's me in the video Tutt posted...

I used to go by Moki but had trouble logging on with that user name so here I am as Camp Cook.

First Mr Tutt thanks for posting and forwarding the link too me.

Blackhawk you asked what knife I have on, it is a Buck Knighthawk here is the link http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?eve ... uctID=2921 .

Gihon about remote area handgun carry here in Canada, if you work in the bush (remote wilderness areas) you can apply for a Authorization to Carry handguns permit that allows you too carry a handgun for the defense of your life or the lives of others. There are fewer than 900 ATC holders in Canada and about 400 of them are here in BC.

The shoulder holster was made by Bob Mernickle actually all of my leather holsters are made by him he is originally from my area here in BC and I know him fairly well and his products are excellent.

Here is the link to the holster http://www.mernickleholsters.com/sh/sh7b.html I had him modify it for me with the thumb break from this holster http://www.mernickleholsters.com/fc/fc13r2.html and a wider strap that goes around my waist for my speed loader pouch http://www.mernickleholsters.com/ps/ps29.html I also have the second holster with the thumb break for when I don’t want a shoulder rig on.

Oh yeah the gun is a shortened SRH in 454 Casull.

AJMD429 I would never leave the handgun cocked like the guy in the video did.

I have both the double action SRH's and single action Bisley Vaquero's in 45 Colt I go with the double action more often not just because it is more powerfulit is if I ever needed to reload at least I would have more of a chance with a double action revolver and a speed loader.

Although I take my family into the remote wilderness canoeing and camping once per yer, I think it would be a tad difficult to convince the Ontario authorities to issue one of those much coveted permits to me. I haven't looked into it. Where we go, I only have to provide security against Black Bear and Cougar, so I'm willing to use my antique sixgun for that (256 grain bullet at almost 800 fps). It sure ain't no 454 Casul, but I'm a big fan of shot placement. If I could get one of those special permits, however, I'd go for it in a heartbeat
