I am "assuming" you have it headspacing on the shoulder? I have a 256WM that I make cases for it out of 221FB and put in a 223 extractor.Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I don't remember seeing any shoulders on my .444 cases.
Sounds like a lot of work but worth it if there is none available. Do you have to turn or ream the necks?

You are right but the post was a little confusing and I had to go back and read it twice before I got it. My first thought when I saw your post was that a .444 didn't have a shoulder.

This post got me to thinkin... (usually a dangerous activity), as I'd never heard of this being done... so I searched Google, and viola! Found this over at Marlin Owners: http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/444-m ... butt-2.html. This thread is from back in 2011, but on page two (where the link takes you), is an article from the 10th Edition of Handloader's Digest, that details just how versatile the author feels the .444Marlin is as a survival rifle.
Interesting read. Piqued my interest... but not enough to make me beg 6pt-sitka to sell me one of his .444s!!! I'll just have to stick with my pop-guns...

I've even made .410 brass cases (short, for buckshot and light rat loads) out of .30-06. Takes some serious elbow grease to form the rims on for .444 or .410 out of the rimless '06 case. (And some serious lube, too.). You need the big RCBS press.

Re: anyone else made 444 brass fron 3006
The late Walt Melander of NEI bullet Molds set up a mauser rifle for the 444 rimless - Walt had a different name for it but it escapes me at the moment. Several of Walts .44 caliber rifle molds were made for this cartridge. There was also an article in an early Handloader on a Mauser set up this way.
A local retired Commercial reloader Russ M who posts around as Fostule was a friend of Walts and the two corresponded quite a bit. Russ had a Marlin 336 rebored by Ackley for the 444 Rimless and the conversion worked very well. Russ did not choose a fast enough twist and it would not deliver the desired accuracy with bullets of 300-grains+
Walt Melanders daughter may share a bit of information on the cartridge and rifle if you ask her.
