Winchester Pump 1906 bolt sticks a little when open

Post by hqm »

I have a couple of pump Winchester 1906 22 rifles, where the bolt sticks a little when it is open (i.e., when it's pressing the hammer down). The bolt slides freely when it's not in contact with the hammer.

I don't want to butcher either of these, but I'm wondering if there's a way to make the hammer not press so hard on the underside of the bolt? I have some Winchester 62 rifles and reproductions which are smooth to cycle even when the bolt is open and holding the hammer down. One idea that occurred to me is to file the little spur on top of the hammer down a little, but I don't want to do anything that might throw things out of whack.

Does anyone have any experience with this particular issue? I was thinking maybe polishing the spur on the hammer or polishing the underside of the bolt might help.

The issue seems to be that the pressure from the hammer spring actually pushes the whole bolt upwards, which causes the friction against the receiver slides.

I have a couple. They worked fine until I took them apart and put them back after deep cleaning. Then they had hard spots in working the action. Try just dissembling them and putting them back together again until you accidentally find that sweet spot.

That, and if you see a bright shiny spot where it's rubbing you could polish it. I've used a very, very fine stone in the past for this. If you reach for the dremel tool, I'll talk about you later.

Often people will go over a gun and tighten up all of the screws. That little screw ( second from the rear on the bottom tang ) is a tension adjusting screw for the main spring. Too much tension on the main spring can cause just the issue you are having. Something to check. I agree with the others above also on things to check. Have fun! Don't forget to lube it!
