Well we went and done did it. Picked up a pup at the pound that is. The one I'd picked out at the Pereira pound came down with the parvo virus or some such and didn't make it. They didn't have much else to choose from either, besides which I wasn't to impressed (favorably that is) by the conditions there. So we drove over to Dos Quebradas, Pereira's sister city, to check out what THEY had. The set up was nicer and one could actually interact with the dogs in a more natural way than in Pereira. So we looked around a bit. They had three little bitch pups about a month old, but they looked to have plenty of poodle, a breed for which I care not. Plus they were on the young side, I wanted something that'd been socialized with other dogs a bit more. There was a little black thing, looked kind of like a miniature black lab, but she was shy, to say the least. She'd either been mistreated or neglected, at any rate not properly socialized with people. And each time I'd stoop down to check out one or another there was a three legged crossbred bitch that would try to get attention. She was very friendly but not what we were looking for, too large and too old.

And then there is Burka. A mutt of mongrel crossbreed background who was not overly friendly and yet not shy either. And when folks who handled her and fed her and such came around she'd perk right up. I checked her over and talked with them a bit. Not much background known, she showed up a little while back with one eye hanging out of the socket. They put it back and other than a bit of swelling still she looks fine and apparently suffered no permanent damage. So we paid for shots and worming (about $15 or so) and in a few weeks we're to take her back to get spayed as well as to finish up her series of shots.
So we headed home. Got here, let her out a bit so she could relieve her bladder, took her upstairs and gave her a warm bath followed by a blow dry. She's a very calm pup and took everything except the soaking in stride. Once we got the pound smell off her and got her warmed up again we took her down and fed her. They'd already fed her they said, but she acted like she'd not eaten in days.

Well, she took to the crate with no problem and we took her out several times during the evening to romp and explore the back yard. She's responding well and usually comes right away when we call her. And the first night wasn't bad, considering she's used to plenty of other dogs around. We could hear her playing with her toys in the crate but she didn't whine much until an hour before official wakeup time. So out to the back yard she went to drain her radiator. She sniffed around a bit, but wasn't doing anything more than her usual exploring so back to the crate for another nap attempt, didn't work she was restless, so down to the breakfast bowl she went then outside to relieve intestinal pressure. This time she went back in her crate for a brief snooze before the alarm told us it was time to REALLY start the day. Although we've had her for less than 20 hours, she shows a lot of promise. She'll be a small to medium sized dog and looks like she'll be a part of this family for a while to come...
Oh. And as for the name? Dogs tend to react better to simple, one or two syllable words. I don't care for using people names for animals so this one seems to work fine.
