30 WCF downloaded to 32-20?

Post by 1894cfan »

So, what do you guys use for 30/30 loads to replicate 32-20 velocities?

So far, all I've got is 8gr Trail Boss with RCBS 115gr 32-20 GC cast with Lyman #2 for a weight of 121gr. I'm also kinda working on a load using some Ba10 that I reluctantly bought not all that long ago, so far 7gr with the Lee 309-113F soupcan.

6 1/2 grs Unique with a 115-120 gr cast bullet. I use a bit of dacron pillow stuffing over the powder, its been much more consistant in ignition/sound. Nice fun load.

A .310 or .315" round ball with 3 grs Unique is fun, good for grouse and small game, and makes little noise, about like a 22 standard vel.

Malamute, I'd go with 2.8gr/.3cc Lee scoop of bullseye or 2.0gr/.3cc Lee scoop Ba10 with the ball.

And, I have been loading the 32-20 down to cat sneeze loads.. 3.5 gr of trailboss behind a 115 gt lead bullet..rough on ground squirrels out to 75 yds or so.
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

Thanks for that Les, but not sure how the 30/30 would do with a load that low. BTW, mine has a 20" barrel.

Didn't mean to come across as a smart A.. Just carrying the idea to the next level down. Never chronograph any of these loads. Was cautious about lodging one in the bore. If you figured out the ratio of case capacity to powder volume, the 32-20 cases are maybe one third full of Trailboss. What does 8 grains TB look like in the case? Could you safely go lower? I'll be watching for your results as I have a couple extra 30-30s that could be pressed into service for squirrel shooting.

I dont have or use either of those powders. Unique works. :)

The charge (3 grs) may be from an older Lee scoop set. The first one I had was red scoops, early 1970's I believe. I've tried a few with Red Dot in the 348, but havent really shot them enough or with the intention of seeing if they shoot any better than the Unique loads.

As for the lighter loads, besides the round balls, which work great and have never stuck a ball, I have a 77 gr 32 auto mold I want to try for extra-light loads. It should work fine in the same general range as the round balls. The old Ideal manuals show both for extra-light loads in 30-30.

One of my favorite 30 WCF plinking loads is the 120 grain Lee g.c. bullet ahead of 9 grains of Green Dot for 1600 fps. I am using Green Dot because I have a keg of it, but if you have Unique the same charge of Unique would give you equal velocity at lower pressure.

I haven't done this load with Trail Boss because I have run out of Trail Boss, but QuickLoad says 12 grains of the TB would give the same velocity as the 9 grains of Green Dot and be almost a full case. The 9 grains Green Dot is less than half full so you would have room to make a double charge which might cause more excitement than a fellows really needs.

I got a box of 115 grain cast plain based bullets sized for the 32/20 and ran them through a Lee .310 sizer. Then I loaded them with 7 grains of Unique. They shoot great. Lots of fun.

While I do have a bit of Unique left, I have more trail boss and about 8 pounds of Valmet Ba10 in the stash. So far I've gone from 4gr to 8gr of Ba10 with both Lee 309-113F and RCBS's 32/20GC 115gr (with Lyman #2 it runs 121gr) with fare group sizes and no problems, usually running inside 2-3" at 50yds. I'm getting about 1" groups with the RCBS 32/20 and 8gr Trail Boss and about the same size groups with 4.7gr of Bullseye with the Lee soupcan bullet. Other molds that I have are the Lee 100gr RN and Lyman 32/20 115gr PB.

P.S. I've been sizing all my 30cal cast bullets to .309 and have no problems with leading so far.

Those round ball loads are a hoot. I use them in my .308s too.

Gotta agree with you. Went to the range yesterday and came away with 50rds nicely expanded, cleaned them up, stuffed in new primers and LIGHTLY flare the case mouths and dumped in 2.0gr Ba10 and hand seated balls sized and lubed with LLL (the liquid alox stuff).
The more I use Vectan Ba10 the more I like it. Got up to 8gr of the stuff with Lee 309-113F and am getting good accuracy at 50yds with no access pressure signs. :D
