Whipsawed at the local gun shop

Post by Bill in Oregon »

So I walk in to my LGS to buy an overlooked, dust-covered No.I Mk. III Enfield barrel still in the factory wax for $75, when the shop owner says, "Bill, stop and look to your immediate right." Awww, geez, it's a nice Mark II Martini stamped LSACo. 1888, and the bore is pristine. So I am unexpectedly out more than six large.
So we get to yakking about this and that, and I mention that the day I turned 21 back in 1974, I went to our local drugstore chain and bought a new S&W Model 29 Highway Patrolman with 4-inch barrel, price about $142.
His eyes light up and he says, "Bill, this Model 28 just came in," and plops same in my quaking mitts. It's got the same 4-inch barrel and those grips Jeff Cooper once described as "about as concealable as an ear trumpet."
I'm gone. I'm broke. I have no discipline. Is there a Serenity Lane for gun nuts?

:D

No - welcome to the club --- I've done that a couple times this year myself -- I'm supposed to be selling off more of my seldom used pieces, but i'm a little behind on that too

-- oh, and pics of the new goods would be nice if you can --- :) :)

it's hardware. it's timeless. great investment in stability in unstable times. things that will hold their value.

I hope you didn't sell the hwy patrolman to your brother for cheeeep like someone I know did ... chirp

I understand the Enfield and the Martini had to go home with you... but "six large"??? On what did you spend the other five thousand+ bucks? :?: :?: :?:

Drop him another $600-800 for the pristine 28 and go shooting!

In my neighborhood and economic class, "large" means Ben Franklin.
Will get photos of the Martini up soon. Still have more loot to assemble before I can spring that Model 28.

Dig out some seldom used pieces and see if he'll do a trade. Guess I'm an enabler too.

Around here "large" is the same as a long wheelbase $10

It would be a lot easier to leave those guns in the shop if they didn't talk to us.

I really hate it when they start crying, Pulleeze take me home, sniff, sniff. :(

I sure hope not, or my wife will have me involuntarily committed for an extended (as in life sentence) stay.

She doesn't even raise an eyebrow anymore when I walk in with something that came from the fun store.
