Lilliputian Combination Gun?

Post by Shasta »

I stopped by a local pawn shop yesterday and they had just put out a very unusual gun that really caught my eye. It is a very tiny side by side exposed hammers combination gun. The hang tag said the left barrel was a 9mm smoothbore and right barrel is .22 rimfire. The upright hammers are very close together and located directly behind the bores. The stock is a very light colored, plain grade wood with a cheek piece. The action is opened via a side lever. The extractor was a single piece that raised both cartridges, and it was quite thick for such a small gun. There are absolutely no makers marks or caliber markings, only a couple very tiny proof marks on the right side of the receiver. The action locked up nice and tight. Asking price is under $500.

I've tried searching the internet for information, but found nothing helpful. Does anybody here know anything about such a gun? I have absolutely no use for it, but it sure has raised my curiosity!

edit: it is very similar to this one on Gunbroker-

I'm mainly posting so I can watch this thread's responses. Very interesting. I'd probably buy it just to play with.

Did you find this thread?

vancelw- no, I had not found that thread. That is very useful information! Thanks! :D

Despite my fascination with this gun and the fact that I have never seen another, I won't buy it simply because I try to keep my collection focused on hunting and metallic silhouette shooting. I will pass the information on to the shop owner as I'm sure he is not all that familiar with German garden guns either.

The .22 barrel maybe 6mm flobert, if in good condition .22 shorts or longs can be fired in it, the 9mm barrel is probably 9mm flobert rimfire. Still available in the States but hard to find.
Course I'm only guessing...

I've seen 9mm rimfire shotshells in my travels.
A nice little gun for keeping the critters out of your veggies & fruit trees, but I would expect a good quality air rifle would work as well.

I have a Anschutz 9mm shotgun and you are correct, a good air rifle is better, the 9mm is only good for about 12 yards but just the job on running rats or rats clustered together so one shot will take out two or three.

.

The proof marks should determine whether that Cape Gun was Belgian-made, Belgian-made proved in Germany, Spanish-made/proved, or of South American (Rossi/etc) or Turkish origin.

Did it look like this ?

I went back today and took photos of the gun. I found some additional proof marks on the left barrel that indicate it to be a German made garden gun:

Is the 9mm barrel centerfire or rimfire?

I have a Winchester single shot bolt action in 9mm rimfire that belonged to my mother-in-law. It is very small - kind of a kid's gun. I believe it was probably manufactured in the 30's. Fiocchi ammunition is still available, although pricey. It is a slight step up from 22 shot shells, but not much.

That seems to be more popular (relatively speaking) up in the U.S.. Down in Brazil they sold 9mm centerfire shells for reloading. Never saw one of the shotguns, but the shells were fairly common. Full brass CBC brand with berdan priming. Also saw some full plastic with only a brass berdan priming cup towards the time we left there.
