Mosseyoak`s knife thread prompted me to post this "show and tell" thread about my latest
project.
I have dabbled in knife making for a long time and always thought I would get back into it when I retired. This is something I have wanted to build for some time now.
1 1/2 hp. with step pulleys. I bought the aluminum wheels, pulleys, motor and hardware but the rest I made up from plate and bar stock. I still am waiting on a 1/2" reamer and some cold rolled flat bar for the tool rest but the rest is almost ready to run. the picture below is of a couple knifes I am working on.the finished one is a factory blade with my handle. the short skinner I made from scratch and is all file work except for final polish on the buffer. The guard is still rough and will need to be finished. The Ebony slabs will finish it out.
OK, back to the shop and starting on the tool rest. More pictures when it`s finished and painted.
Thanks guys, I got the tool rest mostly done today. Still have to make the platten to back up the belt in the tool post area and wire the motor to the switch and power cord.
I was talking to the guy from Texas Knifemakers supply when I ordered belts and he said "that 36 grit ceramic belt will take your finger off to the first joint before you even know you touched it" .
Last night I watched a YouTube video of a guy grinding a blade with a 40 grit belt .Starting with a profiled and heat treated blank,he ground the blade bevel and kept it cool and took care to match the sides and did it in less than 3 minutes. That guy is a pro though, he said he buys handle screws 60 K
At a time and micarta handle material in 4x4 FOOT sheets.
