Jim, if you can get Rat poison containing Brodifacoum it should work. Bell laboratories sell it in South Africa, it is called Jaguar Blox.
After 30 years in professional pest control it is my choice for quick results.

Thanks. I will look. There are several kinds available here. One is sort of a syrup and you mix it with peanut butter or something soft that rats will eat. Pretty fast working. The other is sort of 'pills' ... takes longer but does work. And if they come into the house while it's working they are kinda slow.
