Hi All,
Been a long time since I've been on here. I am looking for advice on how to crimp the 30-30. In the past I have used what a friend described to me as bouncing the ram. It works I guess but seems rather imprecise...... So I am looking for a more consistent way. Maybe I am over analyzing it....
Thanks,
HH

Re: how to crimp 30-30
Been shooting the 30-30 since 1967 and loading for it since '73.
If the bullet has a good crimp groove, use your standard seating/crimp die. If not, get yo-self a Lee Factory Crimp Die. ------6

If your brass is all trimmed to the same length... it's precise. Otherwise, you're askin' for trouble.Sixgun wrote:Been shooting the 30-30 since 1967 and loading for it since '73.

You can set the die so the crimp is complete at the top of the ram's stroke: Proper Rollcrimp Adjustment - Updated. The theory and practice are the same, whether for a pistol case or the .30-30... just make sure you don't put TOO much bell on the case mouth for seating the bullet. Just that much harder to get out... and leads to collapsed shoulders or insufficient crimp.

Re: how to crimp 30-30
I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die for almost every 'rifle' load at this point, and the handgun cartridges (32-20, 357 Mag, 44 Mag, 45 Colt) that I can get the 'rifle' type Lee FCD for (the 'pistol' and 'rifle' Lee FCD's are very different from one another).
Anyway, one of the nice things about the Lee FCD for 30-30 is that it is relatively immune from case-length variation.
Here's a thread on them - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=51038

I think I have Lee FCD's (some were $25 'custom order') for

P.S. looks like they have some non-cataloged 357 Mag FCD's of the 'collet' (rifle) type...
