Random Thoughts on Neck Tension

Post by Mainehunter »

I'm ready to modify a Lee 32 WS FL sizing die that I picked up free and enlarge the diameter to 35 cal. for my 35/30-30. Before I get started what would be the appropriate neck tension for cast bullets? .001-.002 under bullet diameter? (.360 cast bullet, neck ID .359-.358) Are the diameters the same for jacketed bullets? Your thoughts????

FWIW and my $.02, I was taught and have read that .001 to .002 tension is all that is needed. Jacketed bullets will just stretch the neck to that size, and more than that and it will distort cast bullets.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

For cast bullets, an expander plug/button that measures 1 to 2 thousandths smaller than the bullet will do fine in cartridges that will be crimped. The brass will spring back a little giving the bullet even more tension than the difference in bullet and expanders diameter suggests. I like to have 3 to 4 thousandths neck tension when shooting jacketed bullets.

The idea with cast bullets is to keep the bullet you are about to shoot perfectly aligned with the bore. You do that by shooting a round and then measuring the inside diameter of the fired case.

The old timers......for match shooting (duty or hunting loads excepted) would size it for a slip fit in the fired neck...a little taunt...not much more than that.

One of my most accurate rifles is a 348 and I size 351 for it. The bore will take care of any excess. Yes, there are many exceptions to my no brained rule but this has worked for me for 40+ years.----6
