Fixed 4X recommendations?

Post by nralover »

My wife would like a new 4x scope for her 336 to replace the aging Tasco Pronghorn. (To its credit, that little scope has been very reliable for more than ten years) What are your recommendations for an affordable 4x replacement?

What is it going on and what won't an old Weaver not do?

Well, the Tasco still works. She just wants a new one, and she never denies me the new purchases that I want. :)

Ah, well, in that case - take her to the shops and let HER pick the scope!

I would suggest taking her to a big box store's (Cabela's, Dick's, Costco, etc) sporting goods dept, and let her peek through ANY scope's on display, so she can choose a reticle style.

Once she settles on one, you can order a scope fairly inexpensively at http://www.swfa.com if the store doesn't have one within your budget.

Not a 4 fixed, but I bought a Nikon PROSTAFF at Bass Pro in Bossier City, LA yesterday for $149.99. Same price from brick & mortar store as the swfa price!

Actually, a decision like that deserves a road trip to Dallas and a visit to the SWFA store south of there between Waxahachie and Midlothian! Combine that with a side trip to the Ranger Museum in Waco... and golly, what an experience. A coupla day road trip is like a mini-vacation and let me tell ya, the eye candy at the Museum is worth the trip alone!

A nice, clean used Leupold 4x. Should be able to score one for <$150.

I concur with the Leupold, since Burris no longer makes their Signature fixed 4x plex reticle scope.

I bought a couple of K4s on sale a few years ago. They are OK but nothing to get excited about. Check Optics Planet and see what they have.

I chose to go the Leupold route for my 2 scopes. The FX line is good and American made with bullet proof after sale service. The older M8 series suits me just fine and affordable with the same service. I look through a $1500 dollar scope and a Fx/VX 2 or 3 and don't spot the $1000 buck difference, lots of folks do however. Also the FX/M8 series has some of the best eye relief and a friendly eyebox. I am a greenhorn regarding scopes but recently asked a similar question and this is the outcome of my research and purchase.
