Antique Peters Shot Shell Box.

Post by cshold »

Peters 10 gauge shot shell box. It was produced around 1888 or 1889, and is possibly the earliest Peters shot shell box known to exist.

Casa,
Ever since I was a little kid (not much has changed), I too, have been infactuated with old boxes of ammo. This is just a small sample of what I did manage to accumulate.----6

A few years ago I inherited my great grandfather's Remington Model 1889 hammer SxS 10 guage made in 1892, the cheapest model with homogenous steel barrels. It had been rechambered to the "old magnum" 2 7/8" 10s and came with a box of Peters high base #4s and a small sack of apparently handloaded 10 guage ball cartridges in paper Winchester cases.

This gun has 32" barrels and the right barrel is marked "Ball" on the bottom flat and is cylinder bore; the left barrel is about improved/modified (or a slightly more open full choke) and is marked "Choke." The opening of the choke and lengthening of the chambers seems to have been done at the same time that a little dovetail open sight was let into the top rib, presumably for sighting in those "punkin balls"! My GGF was no gunsmith, so I assume he had a gunsmith in California do the work (we had LOTS of them then, now not so many....).

These old doubles REALLY kick with all the drop in their stocks! I have shot a few RST low pressure shells in it, just for laughs, and killed a coyote that was entering a friend's barn in upstate NYS with one of the Peters 4s. He never knew what hit him....

Paper shells just have a smell and character all of their own. I wouldn't want to go back to them exclusively, but I'm glad a few outfits still make 'em.

Amen to that.
I use paper shells exclusively in the Parker girls.

That photo of the box of 16 gauge Peters High Velocity really brought back memories. Dad had a model 12 Winchester in 16, (I still have it) and those were his favorite duck load in a no. 4 shot. 26 inch full and boy does it throw a tight pattern with that load. It opened up a bit with 8s as I watched him kill 7 straight quail with that gun. It holds 7 of the paper shells with over shot cards and the rolled crimp.
