So I go to Cabela's today

Post by jdad »

I had some time so I thought I would cruise the store. Shelves were stocked full, but as I have noticed it's all MSRP....or real close to it. At least I know I can find it here if I really need it bad.

Powder - TONS of rifle powder, but not a grain of pistol powder.

22 ammo - Remington Thunderduds (50ct) $2.99
CCi Stand Velocity (50ct cardboard box) $8.99  Are they serious? .18 per round

Gun Library - This is a new store so they have a lot of the waaaay overpriced stuff, from other locations. Anything that the other stores knew that they would never sell they sent here. You could buy new, for what most of the used handguns were priced at.

I did find an antique 1873 (ca 1883) chambered in 38-40, with Cody letter, for $1100. They only problem was that the barrel was a 24" post 1903 (proof marked) replacement. The Cody letter said that it left the factory with a 26" barrel, so when I pointed out that the barrel and mag tube were both 2" short all I got was an "oh". I offered $800 because it wasn't anything, but a good shooter and they said that was below what they paid for it.

If it's not on sale, I don't buy it at Cabelas....I do like their Visa card....I put every penny on it, and get about 250 bucks +/- a year in free stuff.....I have about a hundred bucks in points saved up right now....What to do, what to do..... 8)

I've got one of those too, but it takes me a while be build up any worthwhile points. I was talking to my mortgage guy the other day, and he said he had a Cabela's card too. He pays it off every month like I do, except he said he runs $60,000 through his every year.

ALWAYS talk to the Gun Library Manager... But, they hate a buyer more knowledgeable than they are!!!! I haven't bought a new vehicle in 9 years... and when I walk in the local Chevy house, all but the newest salesman point to the back and say, "...he's in his office." We usually talk hunting... but sometimes our '55 Chevy's! Or when he'll trade me a new Camaro for my 25 year old one... I upped the ante a week ago, I started in on a new 'Vette for my Camaro... Since it's reached that 25 year old mark... it's now an "Antique"!

Cabelas has three levels of Visa cards. The classic Visa gives you 1% in points on thing you buy everywhere and 2% on purchases made at Cabelas. There is also a Silver Visa that gives you 3% on Cabelas purchases if you use it for $10,000 in purchases. A Black card will get you 5% on Cabelas purchases but you must spend $25,000 a year on the card. The Silver and Black card still only give you 1% on purchases made at places other than Cabelas.

$1100 for an 1873 with a factory replaced barrel is not all bad. How was the "condition" and the mechanics? Try to find a decent 50% 1873 for less than $1800.

What collectors don't want to see is some off the wall replacement barrel. A factory replacement barrel will drop it maybe 15-20% as opposed to a drop of 50% for a $29.99 gunshop reblue.

There's not much left to choose from for the beginning collectors/investors.---6

Stopped buying from them cause they put a store in Ark now I gotta pay tax. With tax plus shipping I could buy cheaper from the new Bass Pro in town. Do have a Cabellas Visa though. I think Bass Pro tries to match the local Gander Mtn. high prices. I still go to the last two good local gun shops.

26" barrel and mag tube replaced with 24". Barrel only has the "WP", not the "Circle P", so I don't think it was factory. Wood was lightly sanded, rear sight was wrong, but the mechanics were good. This was a good shooter because of the bore, not a collector piece.

I'm willing to pay the meh prices to put the gouging middlemen out of business. They've vastly overstayed their welcome.

Jdad,
I hear ya....short mag. tubes that are not "right" tend to really throw off the looks. You and I would not pay much more than 5 for something like that but......in my younger days...I was hungry.........there are hungry people today :D ----6

Kfarm, how do they compare to Fort Thompson? Does Gander Mountain have an powder now? I don't get down there very often, I did get some powder at the new Bass Pro a couple of months ago.

Jerry, Fort Thompson's prices are OK. Some things you gotta watch but over all bout the same as the box stores except Academy. I like FT, they have 22's mostly CCI's in good supply, lots of rifle power no pistol. All in all a good store. I find Gander to high and snotty people. Bass Pro is to far to drive to but the time I went prices high. Hornady 3 die set was $55, they did have a bunch of stuff. Have a good friend living over at South Side, I get up that way every now and then. Last time was the world famous Batesville ham fest.
