1876 Winchester makes meat

Post by Dusty Texian »

Had a good hunt for Wt. and wild hog last wk. and was lucky enough to take a nice Wt. buck with my old 1876 Winchester 40/60 cal.The buck was shot here in West Tx. at about 110yd. hit low in the chest . At the shot he sprang up ran about 30yd. and went down for good. My load for this hunt was a 210gr. original bullet cast soft from the original Winchester mould and lubed with deer tallow and beeswax ,a std. Win. lg. rifle primer and 55gr. by volume of 2ff Swiss bp. in a Jamison case. Here is a pic. of the Wt. buck and the charcoal burner!,,,,,DTImage

Wow! There's time warps showing up in lots of spots!! Nice rifle, nice buck ...good on you, Dusty.
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.
I was born this way.

It's one thing to talk about how the old timers did it, but to actually go out and live the experience has got to be very satisfying. Congratulations on a nice buck, and I sure like that rifle!

Yes! Guns are made for shooting, not for looking at (at least not, JUST for looking at)

An 1876 or 73 are the few examples I don't have....yet. :D

Great job DT!

As I stated in another post, nothing beats piling up a big buck with an old rifle.
You have some classy iron for sure. I've never been lucky enough to own a 76, but I've always wanted one. They are just cool on steroids. :D

I wish you had been there also Ollogger! I had a long drag to the Jeep. LOL! And deer are harder to drag after my 30s and 40s went by ! Hondo1892 that is an old Lyman tang sight on that rifle, sure helps my focus on the sights and target. Thanks for the kind words to everyone! ,,,,,,,DT

Sweet on so many levels. Classic rifle. Classic BP load. Classic game. Blessings

Congratulations, It's always more fun to take a deer with an old rifle, and especially a nice old original like that one.

Cool !

Only thing that woulda made that any better for me is if the rifle had been chambered for the 50-95 . Nothing wrong with your cartridge I just always had a soft spot for the 76 in 50-95 and the 86 in 50-110 .
