Shims for 1873 Lever?

Post by TheTinMan »

I recently bought an Uberti 1873 replica and did something pretty stupid. I removed a very narrow ridge part way around the area of the lever where the pivot point is thinking it would smooth out the lever action. It did, but it also made the lever somewhat sloppy in terms of side-to-side movement.

Can someone tell me where I can buy shims to put on either side of the lever pivot screw to correct my mistake?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sure, go to any auto parts supply store and buy steel feeler gages. Then just cut the correct thickness to the shape you want.

Yep. Or go 'low-brow', and just use pieces of aluminum beverage-can; I do that for the oversize dovetails sometimes seen on Rossi's when I'm installing new sights.

For sights, that will work. I would not use aluminum can for a high-wear area like this, though. Steel feeler gage is the way to go. One gage will supply many shims for many purposes.

Yep. Aluminum is fine to 'take up space', but when there is an additional 'bearing' function due to parts movement, steel or bronze would be my choice.

P.S. - given your forum name (TheTinMan), I guess I should have suggested a thin piece of. . . tin...!!!!

Most Uberti 73 levers have the lever flop. Makes for fast operation.
