I'm a proud Dad

Post by hondo1892 »

I went and bought my daughter a new crossbow last Friday. Her old one was a cheap one and the trigger was real heavy. So we went and checked out a Parker "Centerfire".The owner of the shop let us shoot the bow and see if it was what we wanted. My daughter really liked it so the old man got it for her. I took her out hunting on Saturday evening and we seen a doe with twins five minutes after getting on the stand. But nothing else showed up the rest of the evening. We went back Sunday evening and moved to a better spot where we had a log in front of us. At about 7:00 pm I noticed some legs and told my daughter to get ready there was a deer heading our way. It came out from behind some vegetation and we seen it was a nice buck. It was moving along eating acorns and didn't notice we were around. It got about twenty yards from us but wouldn't stop out in the open. So the next time it stepped out from behind a tree I grunted and it stop broadside. She made the shot and it took off. I seen it go down about sixty yards away. When we went to get it we found out it was a nice nine point. She was really happy since it was her first buck. Dad was even happier. I've been trying to get a buck for her for several years now. It's been hard though because of her class schedule and internships. This semester she has a light class load and more time to spend with Dad hunting. Life is good.

Cool. All women should hunt before adulthood (as should all men).

Doc, I agree. I started taking my daughter hunting when she was two. She started hunting at eleven. I have more fun watching her get a deer than myself.

You've done a fine job of bringing her up right Hondo. I know a lot of people who can't say they've shot a nine point, myself included.

Nice job! Congratulations!

Thanks guys. I couldn't ask for a better child. She has always been a good kid never disrespectful or any other problems. I don't know if it had anything to do with no video games, good parenting or just lucky. She has lots of common sense also. Something most young people seem to have lost.

Nice deer! He's a dandy! Glad to hear that your girl has a level head on her shoulders. So many of our youth today are lacking that....

I took my 14 year old daughter out a few times last year. The first morning we went out, she toughed it out for a couple of hours, shivering most of the time. Finally she asked if I would be mad if she walked back to the house. I told her of course not, it was cold and we hadn't seen anything anyway. She stood up, took about 5 steps and a group of 11 doe and yearlings spooked and ran just over the brow of the hill (coming from just out of sight from where we were sitting). My daughter froze and I told her to sit back down. We watched as those deer ran in a single file line all the way across the field and into the tree line on the other side. After they were gone, my daughter asked why I didn't try to shoot one. I told her that I normally don't take a shot unless I know that I can make a good one. We laughed about seeing so many at one time. Even though we came home empty handed that day, it was a good teaching experience and we did see some deer, so I count that as a good day.
