Model 12 winchester - 20 ga.

Post by geobru »

Went into the local candy store and saw a pair of Model 12's, a 12 ga and a 20 ga in the used gun rack. I seem to gravitate to them like I do with leverguns! I have a 12 and 16 ga, and have always wanted a 20 ga. but haven't been able to find one that fit my budget.

The 20 gauge had a serial number less than 2000, had a chip gone off the toe of the stock, 25" barrel, 2.5" chamber, full choke, and was well worn to the point that the bolt didn't stay locked when you remove the slide to take it down. There are no problems with the operation of the action when it is all together.

I pointed out to the owner that the bolt wouldn't stay put when taking the gun apart.

He replied, we fixed it the other day and now its broken again. This thing needs a new home. You want a project?

I asked him what he wanted for it?

$150

What would you have done??

I kind of felt like I now have a little piece of Winchester history!

I have one like it although mine is a later made gun.
My favorite upland bird gun. I got a triple on ringnecks with it once.
1 1/8 oz of #5`s my favorite load. :D

What's better than finding a neat old gun for a bargain price? Finding one you can tinker with! Neat find.

I’m jealous. I love the model 12. I inherited my dad’s model 12. He bought it at a farm auction sometime after he got back from WWII. It’s well used and there’s no blueing left, but I wouldn’t take $10,000 for it.

I am a total and complete sucker for rode-hard-put-up-wet old pump guns like this one. Very nice purchase, and hope you can put her back in harness! There's just something about a Model 12.

Both my father and my wife's father left model 12s behind. Both 16s.

M.M., a Model 12 in 16 was my first shotgun. I sure miss that thing.

I've got a friend who currently has over fifty Model 12's. He's a Model 12 nut. They can be a pain to work on sometimes though. So many internal parts require hand fitting.

A 102-year-old gun in a sucky chambering that didn't work well, and I'd pass....

However, a 102 year old gun in a STANDARD, USEFUL chambering, that can likely be EASILY FIXED UP. . . and OF COURSE I'd have bought it... 8)

(I've passed, with honors, the 'Levergun and Other Firearms Enabling Certificate' class, so no problem - whatever you want to buy that's "cool", I will DEFINITELY tell you "you did the right thing...")

Doc, you have no idea how much of a burden that took off my shoulders!

I am sure I just had a huge amount of endorphins released into my bloodstream.

I think I could get addicted to that feeling. Makes me want to go buy another gun to see if I can make it happen again!
