Speer Hot-Cor 220 Winchester 356

Post by daisygordoninc »

Have anyone out there used Leverevolution powder with a 220 gr. Hot-Cor for Winchester 356?

The research I've done with LVR is that it doesn't do well with heavy for caliber bullets. It's not bad but it's niche seems to be medium weight bullets for caliber. In the 338 MX LVR doesn't come close to factory loads with 200gr bullets. The LVR powder they market is geared for the 30-30 and 308MX , you can get factory performance with those.

I agree with what Ben said. In fact, i've not had any luck even duplicating factory 30-30 loads with the LVR powder. Accuracy hasn't been worth a hoot in my experience either. I have one more 30-30 rifle to try it in, if it doesn't work in it, then I'm done with that powder. AA2015 works very well with the Speer 220gr. bullet in the 356. If my memory is working this morning, I was getting near 2300 fps.

Haven't tried LVR and the 220's in my 356, only 180's and 200's. AA2015br and the 220's works well, so no need.

LVR really shines in my 30-30 and a 195gr cast bullet. 2200fps IIRC and excellent accuracy. 3" group @220yds is not uncommon if I do my part.

I also use LVR and lighter bullets in the 30-30. Friend shoots a 125gr and 130gr bullet in his Savage 24 in 12ga/30-30 with groups under an inch at 80 yds (all he has for his range).

Thanks for the tip on 2015 with Speer 220gr. Do you remember what your load was of
A2015? Did you kill any critters with it?

I got about 3lbs of LVR....I guess I'll save it "for a pinch".

I killed a big hog in Texas with that load. I'm just going from memory here since I'm at work, but I believe it was 39.0 gr. of AA2015 with that Speer 220. I'll double check when I get home tonight.

Advanced Levergunner,

Thanks for the possible load with the 220 Speer Hot-Cor. Have you had any chance to take a look at the load data on that when you loaded for that ?

I apologize, it completely slipped my mind. I am using 41.0 gr. of AA2015. My Speer #12 Manual shows 42.0 to be the max charge, however current data from Accurate Arms website shows a max charge of 39.0 gr.
