I know, I know. been looking at a few Marlins for a while now and this looks to be the best canidate I've seen on the open market in a while. She's listed as a 39as (1988> w/safty) in great condition (we'll see when i fondle it in person) for about $450. I'll try and push that down a bit, of course. It doesn't seem like a screaming deal, but I see it as an investment for my kid too. Sadly, Monday will be the soonest i can paw it :(

Not necessarily married to a Marlin, but the Brownings (I assume you mean the BL-22) are kinda pricey. I'd buy one of the Mossberg .22 levers sooner than i'd throw down for the Browning.

That, and i've never heard anything but praise for the 39a. It's no longer in production by the original company, which makes it investment material as well. And honestly, it just looks better in every respect than a Henry, Browning and Mossberg. IMO of course.

Yea I know what you mean, I would've never paid the big price for the Browning, got lucky and made an even trade on a new one a few years back, I believe it to be the best 22 I've got.

They don't like high velocity, stingers, yellow jackets, etc.
Harms the bolts, learned that from Marlinman, I think he is gone now.

I have not seen him post in a long time, when I bought a bolt from him for my project 39; he warned me of this.

I can't remember the year they switched over to the high speed capable bolts in the 39's ... maybe 1932? It was certainly before WW2. I have an 1897 with a standard bolt and I've purchased a high speed bolt that I need to fit in order to shoot today's high velocity stuff.

The thread below was where I learned the difference from MM93.

I see by that old post I joined in Dec. 2007 and I had 4,293 posts then.
So the new one that says I joined in 2010 is wrong, that is when Hobie reinstated me.

Lots of us lost posts in the big change over.

I have a 39A just like that one. It is a great shooter. Don`t worry about HV ammo. They are made for it. I installed a Williams receiver sight on mine. It will keep all shots under a quarter size group at 50 yd with Federal blue box. Not quite as good with most others. I haven't tried CCI Mini Mags in it yet though.

FWIW, The .22 Mossy 464 is amost exactly the same as the H001 Standard Henry .22, except the Mossy's a lot more $$$.

The Browning BL-22 is at the top of the fit/finish food chain, but the Marlin 39a is at the top of the accuracy pile.

I've owned/shot/hunted with every single .22 levergun over the years (except for the Win M1873 and the Mossy - which I passed on buying after a coon-fingering) - and can say that the mid-40's to late 50's Marlin 39a's were hands-down the most accurate .22 leverguns available.

Most, I've had, were able to keep 5-10 shots under a dime @ 50yds with open or peep sights.
