This is about to get very real!
Well, I have finished packing up all of my reloading gear, bullet casting stuff, gunsmithing tools and general gun junk and I didn't realize how much stuff I have. It will be a full pickup truck load and then some.I am moving it down this weekend to my retirement home in Rancho Viejo Texas . The garage how now been converted into my shop. I have to officiate at a Niece's weding this weekend and thought I would take a load with me.
The movers will come in about a month and takes all of the non-gun stuff, and the move will be complete at that time. They will also take my drill press and lathe.
I still have to meet Kid Cossack in Victoria at the BBQ joint and fix his pistol before the move is complete. Don't worry Lewis, I have not forgotten and you are still buying.
I have been working at one thing or another without a break since 1960 and I am not certain how I will adjust to retirement. I do have an interview a week from today with some folks at The University of Texas at Brownsville for a part time faculty position. Some prayers will be appreciated, that the interview goes well and I get classes to teach. Teaching is the thing I do best, and don't want to give it up entirely.
A fellow has to do something other that cast bullets, shoot, build rifles and wait for a watermelon to fall from heaven. The irony is, my class room building will be on the wrong side of the "fence" if the feds get their way and build the Border Fence. The Univ. has filed a law suit and I have high hopes I won't have to climb the fence to teach my classes.
I have been looking forward to this retirement business for many years, but the closer it gets, the scaryier it gets. Shoot boys, this is getting real! To say, I am nervous about this would be an understatment.

Why not? Isn't that what "retirement" is supposed to be about?Charles wrote:...A fellow has to do something other that cast bullets, shoot, build rifles and wait for a watermelon to fall from heaven.
Federal Incompetence. In this day and age of Sattelite/GPS survey, you would think they would know where the border is....The irony is, my class room building will be on the wrong side of the "fence" if the feds get their way and build the Border Fence. The Univ. has filed a law suit and I have high hopes I won't have to climb the fence to teach my classes. ...
And if Meheeko don't like it? Well, they can either adopt the Constitution & Bill of Rights & Join, step back, or decide to fight us for it...

Take it easy and enjoy life, Sir......you've earned it. If you feel the need, just go herd cats for a couple hours and you'll remember why you retired....

retirement
Charles, I started driving a tanker in 1965, 42 years of hauling fuel, long hours too most of it. I retired, and trust me, you will get used to it real quick. If your finances are ok, don't worry, all will be good. Happy times are most likely ahead for you.

Well Charles, it is clear that you are the type that never retires. I have been in professional practice for 30 years and have had a chance to follow individuals. Invariably whenever anyone like you retires - THEY GET BUSIER. They usually then don't know when they found time to work. I am sure you will be the same. I wish you the best in your new avocations whatever they are.

Huh ! You obviously haven't been given yore "Honey do list", yet.
I'm busier, now that I'm retired, than I ever was when I was "working".

A few years ago, I was forced into a situation that left me out of work for about 17 months. My wife continued to work and we survived just fine until I was able to find a new job (making half of my previous salary but that's another story). At any rate, it was really tough on me to be idle and I cannot see myself ever really retiring. Do what's right for you - but I'd take a month to relax and then find something to keep occupied.
My motto is "hop 'til you drop"... otherwise, you get stove up and stiff but good luck and God bless with your future.

Charles,
My very best wishes to you in your retirement......or should I say semi-retirement. I sounds like you will definitely have enough interests to keep you busy and hopefully you will get that part time job. The additional income is always nice.
I semi retired in Nov. 2006. I was a bit nervous about it as well but after about a week or so, it was great. I still do a little work a couple of days a week and I get to name my own hours. As Jackie Gleason used to say: "How Sweet It Is!".
As of last month, I finally started getting some of my money back from Social Security.
Have fuunnn!

Good luck Charles. I can tell from the short time I have been here that you are a deep thinker with a good heart. I'm sure neither your thoughts nor your heart will be idle even if you do manage to find time to relax!

Charles,
Never fear... I, for one, will be pestering you for updates on the status of our borders from your unique and genuinely unique perspective. I retired once, but made the unfortunate blunder of not waiting till my wife did. Up every morning @ 0530, a bite to eat and with the fishing pole, a beer or 6, a book or magazine and a lounge chair trudged off to the stock tank for a little casting practice. Never took bait or even hooks, as I didn't want to interrupt that casting practice to bothered catching fish. After about ½ an hour, I'd sit down and leave the line in the water and work on my reading comprehension and barley pop retention.
About 45 minutes later, the wife would back outta the garage on her way to work... I'd wave and blow her a kiss, never knew how much that angered for about 2 months! Consider it a 15 megaton bomb, held under pressure till it reaches about a 15 million megaton bomb. When it went... I got a job, and have been working again for the past 12-½ years at something that keeps me away from home for extended periods. I go home when she asks, leave as soon as she's let me know I've spent enough money for her to notice.
Retirement is greatly exaggerated! Hope your's passes better than mine did! Teaching is a great avocation, as my oldest brother tells me, loves as a guest lecturer, hated it as a professor (but then I was one of his early students; I know I caused an ulcer or two). I considered it a learning experience for him also, he had a clear idea of just how bad students can be. (And Mom would'a killed him if he failed ME! Talk about carte blanche!)
And you're right, I was down there a few weeks ago, delivered in downtown Brownsville, I just ain't sure where the border is, but I do seem to recall crossing a river, just not right one I guess!
Prayers up! Enjoy the sun and surf... don't forget to visit So. Padre Is. I understand the scenery is uplifting!
