Lyman Sight Question
Does anyone know the size or specs of the set screw used as an elevation stop on the Lyman Receiver Sight?

Re: Lyman Sight Question
Don't know, but I bet Lyman does...
Re: Lyman Sight Question
Do you need one? I think I have one if you do.
Re: Lyman Sight Question
Thanks, but no. What I need is a slightly longer one. My elevation setting is about 1/16th higher than the length of the set screw.

Re: Lyman Sight Question
Take it (the screw, not the rifle) to the hardware store and match it up.
Re: Lyman Sight Question
I have been trying, but I have yet to find any local hardware stores with a set screw small enough and or a way to measure that small of a thread to get the proper diameter and thread pitch. I am sure I can order one once I get the specs.

Re: Lyman Sight Question
I took mine out of a Lyman 66A sight. It measures...
~0.385 inches in length.
~0.097 in diameter.
My thread gauges weren't fine enough but a 28tpi seemed to match(?) even though we know that's way too coarse.
Looking in my machinery handbook the closest match is a 3-56. A #3 screw measures...
0.099 in diameter and comes in coarse (48 tpi) or fine (56 tpi)
Hope that helps????
Maybe now that I've jumped out there someone will correct me and tell you what it really it.

Fastenal lists one. They may not be as hard to find as I thought.

Re: Lyman Sight Question
I would consider getting a SHORTER front sight. The higher the sight elevator goes in the base the weaker it gets.

Re: Lyman Sight Question
Wouldn't you need a shorter front sight to keep from having to raise the rear too much? Might be much easier than finding a 3-48 or 3-56 screw

Re: Lyman Sight Question
You are right. I was backwards. Shorter front sight. Edited my post. Thanks!vancelw wrote:Wouldn't you need a shorter front sight to keep from having to raise the rear too much? Might be much easier than finding a 3-48 or 3-56 screw

Re: Lyman Sight Question
Take it in and you can just hold it tight against a similar-diameter bolt, and you will find immediately if the thread pitch is the same. If all the little 'V's match, the bolts will both mesh together perfectly; then you have found your pitch, whether 'US' or 'Metric'. Once you have done that, you then know what nuts to try (ones that are that pitch, and close in diameter). You can pretty much tell by feel/fit to get the right diameter.SJPrice wrote:I have been trying, but I have yet to find any local hardware stores with a set screw small enough and or a way to measure that small of a thread to get the proper diameter and thread pitch.
I do it all the time at the local ACE hardware - no 'gauges' needed...!!!

Yay!
I didn't think of it until this morning that I could have dug through my salvage to see if I had anything longer. I doubt I would have a matte black one, though. Good deal. Best forum in the 'verse.
