tang mounted ladder sight

Post by MacEntyre »

Anyone know a source for good tang mounted ladder sights, not necessarily specific to a particular rifle?

I'd like to put one on my 9422, and another on my 45 cal flintlock.

.

Jeff's Outfitters apparently no longer carries the ladder/vernier typr tang sights, so TOTW is the next best choice.

Try Buffalo Arms, and Jeffs Outfitters. Dixie Gunworks, too.

Buffalo Arms has the best assortment of vernier sights.......none are inexpensive anymore.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Pedersoli Kentucky flintlock is not pre-tapped... Win92 is pre-tapped, and has a short Lyman peep on it now...

For the 92, I'd love to use a Bullseye sight on the rear dovetail for 100+ yards, and flip up a tang sight for longer range shots. For the flinter, I'll leave the modest rear sight on it, and add a flip up tang sight for longer shots.

I'll look through those web sites and see what I can find. Thanks!

There are some cheap vernier sights out there and they need to be avoided as they are almost impossible to repeatably adjust. A good vernier tang site will cost you around $400-$500.

For a 9422 or a Model 92 the Marbles Standard Tang sight is tough to beat. It is click adjustable in .4 MOA increments in both windage and elevation and it looks good on the rifle.

Here are a pair of 9422s with Marbles Standard Tang sights. The upper one has a stock Marbles aperture in it, while the lower on has the Merit #4 Hunter adjustable aperture. The Marbles sight comes with .032", .055" and .102" apertures, while the Merit aperture is adjustable from .022" to .125" in 11 steps.

For a .22LR 9422 you'll need sight #009837 and screw set #995001

For a Model 92 the sight and screw set will depend on who made it and when:

This is true. You get what you pay for. For example:

This DixieGunWorks Site

Is one that I bought for my Steven's

Detailed in this post

Now, I am very satisfied, because it was inexpensive and it does the job. My Steven's has a reasonably effective range of 100 yards, and on a still day, I can hit an 8" circle at 200 yards, thanks to this sight. However, here are some of the draw backs:

1) The windage is controlled by an unmarked bracket held in place by the tension of the eyecup as you tighten it. There for, if you loosen the eyecup, the cross bracket slides freely and you will loose the seting.
2) To raise and lower the sight, you have to slightly loosen the eyecup
3) The screw that raises the sight is lock nutted into place rather than c-clips, so the sight can only be raised till it hits that. For me, that limits the
