28 gauge Pistol barrel

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Would it be legal to have a 12" long, 28 gauge barrel made for a Contender. I know it needs to be rifled, would it need to be chambered for cartridge that could chamber the shotshell like the .45C and .410 barrels? Been searching for this and am finding useless info about it.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

.

As long as the barrel's rifled, it can be any length and chambered for any cartridge & be legal under Federal Law - even if only for the 28ga.

It's still a handgun.

You will probably run into bore-diameter restrictions, since the BAT-men are scared of anything over .500" bore, and the 28-gauge is .550"...
This really is a case where asking permission is better than begging forgiveness..

If there is no state law against sawn off shotguns where you live, you could apply to the ATF for a tax stamp to manufacture a SBS.

May only require the AOW $5 tax stamp. If you were able to match the diameter with another cartridge It may be ok. What is the OD spec of the S&W 500 case?

The ATFE shut down Taurus' attempt to make the .28 ga Judge (I looked at a prototype at SHOT). If you look for some info about that pistol, you should find out exactly what the ATFE's objection was.

500SW is 1.6" long

50/70 is 1.74" long

50/110 is 2.4" long

Bullberrry at one time would chamber a Contender in 50/70. Would be easy to ream it out to the longer 50/110. Was hoping to get a 28gauge so I could stick to fairly cheap and easy to get components.

Forget it. There are plenty of gun/cartridge projects that don't require you to move to Ruby Ridge.
